4870 faster on higher res?

Well I bought a new 19 inch wide screen monitor, and now my 4870 runs a hell of a lot faster. On my old CRT monitor Crysis would run at maybe 30 fps @ 1280 x 1024 with 2x aa. Now it runs at 50 - 60 fps @ 1440 x 900 8x aa and everything else cranked to the max. Is it because I'm using DVI instead of VGA? Or is it the 10.3 drivers? Not complaining, this is awesome. Thinking about getting a full HD monitor with HDMI :good:

Uh, are you sure you didn't change anything else? There shouldn't be a difference in DVI and VGA, and you certainlly shouldn't get more FPS on a higher resolution screen. It could be the drivers I guess. How old were your old drivers?

Your newer LCD more than likely has a lower response time than the older CRT... lower being better.. this may have also helped your gpu

HDMI has sound and video in one cable.. DVI is only video but both are HD so you'll see no difference between them as far as performance...

How would a lower response time yield higher FPS? And when does LCDs have lower response time than CRT monitors?

I was using 10.2 drivers and upgraded to 10.3. Other then that everything else is the same, and no overclocking. I did pull the fan off and re-applied some arctic silver and blew out the dust, still stays at the same temp.

It is my understanding that lcd's have better response times or refresh rate than crt's.... it may have helped with the combination of things..

No, CRT's are instant, there's no delay. The only difference in refresh rate that I've noticed is with CRT @ 60hz flicker, LCD @ 60hz no flicker. I'm confused, but happy. Maybe if I get time I'll rollback ATI drivers to 10.2 and see if that has a major impact. I remember when I had my 3870 I had my CRT monitor and played Crysis, it worked good at 1024x768, and then I hooked it up to my 40" Sony Bravia LCD via vga and no difference at the same res. So it has nothing to do with the type of display.
