Seems a bit ridiculous, but I really want to future proof this computer, think its a good idea?

I'm also curious how one would go about water cooling these behemoths. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Well I just got my 4870 x2 today. Installed it, I'm on it right know. Plays everything that I can throw at it, with incredible frame rates. I might buy a second one, but not any time soon. Thats for sure. As for water cooling, I have no experience there at all. But I do recomend this card and if you didn't no, the x2 means that its basically to cards built together. So buying one would be like running two. Hope I have helped. :)

P.S. Make sure you buy a BIG case, if my case was about half an inch smaller this card wouldn't have fit. I struggled to get it into the case without hitting the sides. Just a small heads up.

Yeah, I have a big enough case, you can be sure of that :D and I do understand the x2, thats why I mentioned it being a bit ridiculous, but pretty awesome imo. I would have a 1:1 ratio of cpu to gpu cores lol.

I also think I found a proper water block, its a full piece, which will cover most of the card, including the RAM, so I think I am all covered.

To water cool it, the only option is a full cover block and you're going to want at least a dual 120mm radiator. If you're going to have the CPU block in there too, then you'll want at least a triple 120mm. These things put out way to much heat for a small radiator.

I've got two radiators, one for the two graphics cards and one for the cpu and northbridge, both radiators are triple 120s

Edit: I actually wonder if I would just be better off waiting for the new 295 GTX

What resolution are you playing at. Many of the top gpus now are not worth it for most people as Steam surveys say that the average game plays on a 17" monitor. At that or even a 20" monitor, a 4850 is well and truly enough. 512mb of dd5 ram and that card will suit most people within the game development cycle vs gpu lifetime.

4870 will outperform the 4850 in the higher resolutions and more demanding programs.

One of the things they tested it on was Crysis, and isnt that a top of the line demanding game?

im gonna be playing on either 17" to 22" depending on what monitor i get later.

That's some advertising right there, Mike! :P

I wouldn't get two of 'em. You wouldn't be able to buy any pants big enough to fit your e-penis.

One of them is more than enough, even for a 24" monitor, the 2GB will be enough. You'll still be able to run at an insane res (1920 x 1200) and still have memory to force AA and AF on.

Plus, once newer cards come out and you have two, you'll have a hard time selling them both.
