4gb cheap RAM, or 2gb expensive RAM

see title, which would give overall better performance :D

say you have 2gb 1066mhz with great timings, a heat spreader, etc etc all the bells and whistles, and then 4gb of 800mhz so so timings, no spreader, just very basic ram. which is going to make for a better system?

I'd say the 4GB of 800Mhz RAM. First off, you can OC it and save yourself some money and to be honest, the difference between 800Mhz and 1066Mhz isn't that much, hardly noticeable unless you're benching. ;)

Go on...

.. Do it!

I just bought them today :) Missed a deal on something else and got paid yesterday so I figured why the hell not. I <3 Newegg.

Double the amount of DDR2-800 is still better. Timings don't have any significant impact on performance unless you have an AMD CPU, and even if you have an AMD CPU you won't notice unless the timings are way off (7-7-7-21 for DDR2-800, for example... but I don't think anyone even sells RAM with that bad timings). If you have an Intel CPU, I doubt you'll notice much gains even when benchmarking.
