4gb?

Hi, my name is dennis, and I need some help. Do you need 4GB of memory or is 2.5-3 fine ? I am asking this because I want to be prepared for vista. Thanks for the help.
 
Yeah, if I were you, I'd just hold off, particually if you're planning to upgrade your current machine. I hear most machines can't utilize more than 2G(not 100% sure about that...) Besides, 2G is PLENTY for today's apps. I can run FEAR without a swap/pageing file, and even open photoshop while it's running to edit my screen shots ;)

The main reason I'm saying hold off, prices should drop some in the future. No reason to rush into getting such a large amount of RAM yet.
 
Yea I agree 2gbs is about all you will need for awhile, (but) I have been thinking about getting 2 more gbs just because I can get matched pairs now, In a year from now it would be my luck the sticks would change models.
 
Actually i believe that motherboards will notice 3gb of memory,its 4gb that some motherboards have trouble with noticing.
 
Mine will read 16gbs, dont know what use I will ever get with that:eek: by the time I will need 4gbs this board will be long gone! pretty sure XP will only use up to 4gbs though!

I wouldnt go above 2.5-3gb. Even 3gb isnt needed. 2gb should be enough for anything today. But, the more memory isnt always better. It is to an extent, until you get so much memory that it starts to actually decrease performance.

I heard somewhere, that there is a cpu with a memory controller that supports up to 1tb of ram or somethin like that......forgot where i heard it though.....thats alot of ram!!!
 
2GB is pretty much standard for high-end computers now. If you want to have more memory, I would upgrade to 4GB, simply because you loose out on dual-channel if you have 2.5 or 3GB of memory.
