4ghz limit?

I have a P4 cedar mill 631 (holding me over for a few more weeks till q9450) and I have been getting pretty brave with it now that I know I'm going to get a new processor, but I seem to have hit a limit of exactly 3.99ghz. Why? I messed with the voltage of the cpu ( all the way to the max Intel said was safe 1.325V). Is it a ram problem maybe or have I just hit the limit of the cpu. It boots all the way to windows at 4.27ghz but instant bsod. I know its not a heat problem ( or I'm pretty sure its not a heat problem) because in the bios it says about 35C. Anything I can do to maybe get the speed above 3.99ghz. It works great at 3.99ghz, no problems at all and it helps so much its not even funny.
I hope the q9450 doesn't have the same problem (I'm sure it wont)

FSB: 275-280
Mobo: Asus Maximus Formula
RAM: Gskill 1000mhz ( hope thats not the issue because it was such a good price)
 
hmmm,cant say i know for sure, all i know is that 3.99 GHz is one hell of an overclock for almost any CPU, also keep in mind that when you look at the cpu temp in the bios, its not using very much cpu power, therefore the temp will most likely be much lower than when you try to run windows, since the bios is before the boot, i would expect that the temp probobly goes through the roof while booting or trying to run windows,

just a guess
 
I will be the first to admit that I'm not an expert in overclocking... in fact I'm probably one of the worst but I dont see how 200 more mhz could cause such instability. When I boot up at 3.99ghz my cpu temp is around 35C so how could 200mhz shoot up the temp another 25C?
Yes I know that a 1ghz increase is a huge overclock for any chip but i have not got anywhere near the limits of my mobo... the fsb goes all the way to 800 on it so thats not the problem.
 
Get a program to monitor your temps in windows. Speedfan is the only one that I can think of right now... any others? Stress you CPU with games and see what happens to the temps.
 
I took a Pent D 805 from 2.6 to 4.0 with a Zalman fun but it was running too hot for comfort. I ran that processor at 3.8 for years and it is still being used by a friend of mine now. That was one heck of an OC chip.

For temp monitoring, I'd use Core Temp. Yes, even a 200Mhz can make your OC become unstable in a hurry. I hope you enjoy your new processor when you get it.
