4pin (molex) to 3pin fan convert (not with adaptor, making it yourself). Safe?

Basically I want to convert the molex connectors:

To this (one on the right):

if all the fan convertors do is take the wires and extend them, so could I safely cut off the 'head' of the molex cable and cut off the connector of my fan and directly connect the wires? I mean I'd buy the convertors but for $5.99 if all they do is extend the cables then I can do that myself...

Here's a drawing for those that don't understand:

The yellow wire on the fan won't be used, neither will the black ground wire and yellow wire on the molex. I'm asking if this will work and if there's any danger in doing this.

What I did with Dad's computer is cut/spliced the wire, the folded it over itself to make it thicker thus sticking in the holes better. I then folded the wire over the molex connection and used a zip-tie to hold it in place. It's been working fine for about 5 years
