5 Beeps

Computer randomly froze, fans became really loud, and the PC had to be shut down. I did some research and found the 5 beeps (AMI BIOS) is either CPU failure or motherboard problem. I went out and bought a new compatible CPU and then computer still gives me 5 beeps. Should I replace the mother board now or is there something else I can do? Thanks. The mother board is an Intel P17G. Thanks.

5 beeps is a Processor Failure, Usually thats not what it is though. If the Processor fails it wont even post. Most of the time its a motherboard problem.

Thanks for the replies, I've tried re-seating the RAM it didn't do anything (I've read it could either be the Mobo or CPU, are you guys saying it could just be the RAM?). It wasn't the CPU because I bought a new one and tried it in the motherboard and it still gave me beeps. I am about to purchase a new mobo.

Have no idea why they thought it would be a memory problem. If you changed the CPU, that just leaves the motherboard. Thats a PC Chips board isnt it? Pretty lowend brand. Get a better brand if you swap it out. Or just update your system. Socket 775 is pretty much a dead end.

I don't wan't to put too much money into the PC though, it's basically only used for internet, I still bought a better CPU and will get a better motherboard.

I thought memory problem because i looked up the beep code and it said cpu or motherboard but sometimes re-seating the ram could fix it. Also testing ram is a lot easier, cheaper, and faster than testing out cpus and mother boards. Would hate to have bought a CPU and Motherboard and find out the ram was the culprit all along, better to start at the bottom I always say.

Yes, beeps is RAM problem

And no that is not true, however probably the more common problem. The beep codes refer to anything that is tested in the POST.
