$500 + monitor

I was thinking about something - My friend said he could build me a fairly decent gaming computer for about $500, of course without a mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers.

How good could it be, I mean if it was build for gaming, and maybe the occasional word document how good of a gaming pc could it be? Would it be quicker than the average family computer?

my friend has access to free microsoft xp OS so that can be excluded from the price.

I would be a little leary... Especially that "free microsoft xp OS" -- Don't get yourself in trouble trying to save a few bucks.

Ask him what the specs are the for the system... Get the very specific details, and post them here.. We'll tell ya if its worth it!

well we aren't too sure on the specific numbers and all but we were thinking about 3.0ghz and 128mb vid card and around 512 ram, maybe more. cause we got a little shot by us that always has brand name sales, and we would just see what we could find. I was just wondering if at the full (average) price of parts if it would be quicker than say a dell, or should i just go with something like a dell that has more functions.

btw the free xp OS he explained it to me and it's really long and im a slow typer so i dont want to spend 4 hours typing it but to make a long story short, there are lots of middlemen and some are in his family so hes very unlikely to get in trouble with it and I'm even less likely.

3.0 ghz, 128 mb video card, 512 of ram is too general. you could get a 2.93 ghz celeron, with a 128 mb onboard, and 512 mb of ram for cheap. hope he doesnt rip you off :)

ok cool so it sounds like it could possibly even be faster than that.

I'm sorry I'm not too specific, I haven't been around in pc's long and I dont know like celeron and onboard and stuff like that lol. but I also haven't looked too much into it cause I cant start looking to buy yet, in about a month i can start to save the money to do so. I'm saving for a car right now so after i get that I will get the pc. and I know he wont rip me off cause I helped him a lot with his paintball stuff and even helped him rebuild/clean his trilogy pro. (autococker, one of the more complicated guns) so this will be like getting even.. in a good way. lol

500 dollars can get you a good gaming pc. i bought a cpu in pieces from newegg about a month ago for a little over 500. that 500 though is w/o ram which my brother gave me and windows xp which i already had. so if you went up to around 650 you can have a really good gaming pc. i have half life 2, source, far cry, and some others but it runs them nice and smoothly and it has quick loading times. so 500 might be a little cheap but if your willing to go 600 you could have a nice gaming pc. as long as you buy it in seperate parts and put it together instead of buying it all as one.

$500 is fine, if u can spare more, then its even better.
Really, let me throw together something quick to show u.
