512 or 768Mb Ram?

I recently bought 2 sticks of 256Mb 400MHz ram. I had 256Mb PC2100 ram already in my comp. My brother was wondering is it better to have 512Mb at 333MHz (motherboard restrictions) or 768Mb running at PC2100?
 
first of all, is it ddr or sdram?

second, u need ram that the motherboard specifies. obviously ur mobo supports pc2100, thats what u need to buy. not ddr400 or w/e it was.

third, pc2100 is 266mhz

fourth, more memory is always better, ur comp likes memory like girls like compliments, they cant get enough :)
 
512MB at 333MHz is most likely better. but it really depends on what you are doing.

Run a few tests and see which yields more desirable results.

Your PC3200 RAM will work jsut fine, mobo will downclock it to the speeds it needs.
 
if you are not doing any hardcore video editing while playing some video games i think you will benefit from the faster bandwidth.

First all DDR ram is 184pin and therefore will fit in any motherboard that uses 184pin slots. Motherboards dont only take one speed ram. Acording to him and I have no reason not to believe him his motherboard can run ram up to pc2700 speeds without overclocking. If he uses his pc3200 ram it will work just downclock it to pc2700 speeds.

As for will more ram be better it depends on how you use your computer. If having the extra ram allows you to use less virtual memory then it is better. If you ram usage never go over 512 then you wont notice a difference having more ram and it will be going slower.

Just make sure you know if you use the pc2100 ram all your ram will be operating at 266mhz speed.

what i meant was that it is pointless to buy pc3200 ram which is more costly than pc2100 when thats all the speed hes gunna get out of it.

well...i've seen PC2100 more than PC3200 b4. the difference now a days is only a couple of bucks. and if he was to ever upgrade to a mobo that could take PC3200, tha extra bucks jsut saved him the price of having to get ALL new RAM.

but you got a point, he could have saved some if he wanted too.

Well you could augue that getting the pc3200 ram will allow you to run the ram at a tighter timing when it downclocked. Anyway he said he could run at pc2700 ram so he should of bought at least pc2700 ram. Did no harm getting the pc3200 ram.
 
i dunno y everyone is saying he said hes running at pc2700, he said pc2100 theres a big diff there. read the original post

because his RAM will either be at PC2700 (333MHz) or PC2100 (266MHz) not really a huge gap.

In the orginal post he said his motherbord supports 333mhz. That would equal pc2700 so if he removed his pc2100 ram and put pc2700/pc3200 ram in it would run at pc2700 speeds. That what I was saying.
 
yes but some were saying how the mobo will downclock the ram from 400mhz to 333, but it would actually be 400 to 266 (mobo ram support)

That only if he kept the pc2100 ram in. If he removed the pc2100 ram and just used the pc3200 then it would only downclock to 333mhz. My guess is that the reason he asking which would be better.
 
To stop your eternal fight about the RAM speed, the mobo supports up to 333MHz=PC2700, I originally had a 256Mb PC2100 stick in the mobo. But now I have 512Mb 400Mhz=PC3200 running at the highest speed that the mobo can handle 333MHz because I took out the old memory stick. Oh and what would benefit me more, using 512Mb 333Mhz or 768Mb 266Mhz? I mostly just play games.

as i said earlier, try them both for a day or 2 each, and see which does better.

i would GUESS 512MB at 333Mhz if its jsut games.
 
yes i am guessing the 512 as well. and right now im finding pc3200 to be cheaper than pc2700 and pc2100 online. so probably a supply and demand factor.
