512mb memory

OK,the computer at work is like 5 years old and has only 512mb RAM.
I think it can handle up 2gigs,how much faster would it make it?

It's HP but since I'm not there I don't have the model.

Also,I moved to another office and had to put the tower on the right side of the desk and I can hear the clicking of the hard drive or what ever it is in there all the time,it's like it never stops.I'm pretty much deaf in my left ear so I couldn't hear as bad and now it gets on my nerves.

I have a 320gig HD in right now and programs like Corel PSP,Photoshop,Canon DPP,music,90 gigs of pictures.
What can I do to get it running faster and keep it from thinking all the time?

I have AVG 9,Malwarebytes and CCleaner that I run.

Have you tried defragging your HDD? That helps a little. 2GB would make a medium-big difference depending on what the other components in your computer are.

If it only has 512MB RAM, more RAM would almost certainly help it out. However, you need a model number or to run something like PC Wizard to figure out if it's got DDR or DDR2. Also, simply reloading Windows on it would probably make a tremendous difference. You could try running Hijackthis and posting a log here, but I assume it's still running on the original install of windows and is probably pretty fragmented and all.

Is Hijackthis a free thing? (cheap,I know).
I have defragged it.

I don't know what ddr or ddr2 is.

Can I reload XP without removing all my stuff,I have QB with all the comany stuff on it and don't want to reboot it if I don't have,it take a while to do that, plus I have to get someone else to do that.

You can't reload a fresh copy of XP without losing your data (unless you have a backup somewhere) and it does require at least 1 reboot as well as reinstalling all your software. I get the feeling that your PC is probably not infected with anything though reinstalling may speed it up a bit.

They are types of RAM, if you get the wrong type it wont work in your PC.

The model# should tell me which one is the right one or I could take the one in there out and take it to Best Buy,they should be able to tell.
I'll look at it tomorrow and see what I can figure out.

Thanks,
