5200 or 5600

What would be a better decision, a GeForce FX 5200 with 256 mb or a 5600 with 128, both 128 bit, assuming that they were the same price?

The 5600. Video ram doesn't mean that much. And I would suggest getting a better card if you want to play games with nice settings, and last you at least 2 years.

I don't know much about that card, but I agree. Most cards and computers have a common area where they can run. Less RAM, you kill you're performace. Too much, and you won't see hardly, if any performace gain. I bet 128M would be fine, or 256M on the other would be more of a waste.

Personaly I would try and stay away from the 9600 series...as they only support 4 Pipelines...you will definetly see a huge performance boost if u can try and pick up an ATI 9500 Pro or 9700 Pro....unless you are picking up an FX5950 You will not see performance boost as the lower end FX cards are outdated and score very poorly on 3DMark05:
Example FX5200 128MB w/ 128bit only scores 289
FX5700LE 256MB w/ 128bit only scores 785
9500 Pro w/128bit score 1586
9700 Pro w/ 256bit score 1857
The choice is yours...personaly I would stay away from the FX series and try and pick up the 9500 Pro or the 9700 Pro...You can pick them up off of ebay for under $85
