I have a 1.6Ghz cpu, 533mhz ram, 5400 rpm laptop. I maxed out the ram, and am not messing with the cpu. I want to increase the speed of the computer, my friend says the order of importance is ram/hd/ and cpu last. He says my computer will be be a lot faster if i go for 7200rpm. It will cost about 100 dollars, for a computer that originally costs 500. What are some of your your opinions?

It will help your load times and increase the paging speed but your friend is full of crap :P The CPU is more important than the hard drive in terms of performance.

5400 to 7200 Hell yeah

I would definately do it. The hard drive is the most underated piece of any computer. I upgraded my old desk top with a new hd and it was a lot faster.
The fresh copy of your operating system wil speed it up alone not to mention the reading of the drive. The spindles in drives slow down alot after 5 yrs depending on hours used.

all CPU mate but with those spec i wouldnt push the CPU any harder, with the HDD the only difference would be when the HDD began to fill, then u would notice the difference

P4 all the way then :)

and a nice large cooling system :P. but again cpu is going to make the most difference, but if you arent willing to upgrade that i dont think i would be bothered with the hard drive. especially if it is a fifth of the total cost...

For $100 on a $500 laptop, I wouldn't bother. And I really don't recommend a P4 on a laptop either, even though it's faster than a Celeron in most cases. It's just way too hot (and therefore, loud to cool it) and power consuming to be a smart choice on laptops.

Just save your dough bro.

Yes a P4 would be hotter but unless it's actually supposed to be very mobile it doesn't matter as much (would would be my inclination as they were looking for performance improvements).

Also, this thread is almost a year old and I'd bet that whatever was decided has been done a long time ago. :P
