Don't Hack!!!

Im getting the dell XPS m170 only because its the most customisable and i get a huge disscount. Is it really worth it to pay like 200 dollars more to get from 5400rpm to 7200rpm HDD. Im thinking its a huge waste of money... plus it will kill battery life.

it is worth it to get a 7200 one if you dont usually run it on battery. the 200 extra is it just a faster of the same capacity or double capacity? i know some dells and alienware nowdays have like 2 7200 drives running in a raid.

u can actually just add the faster drive later for less since you can get a 60 gb 7200 for only 120.

from like a 80gb 5400 rpm to 80gb 7200rpm is 209 dollars but from 80gb 5400rpm to 100gb 5400rpm is just like 60 bucks which one would you go for? and the jump to 100gb 7200rpm is 400 dollars which is out of the question for me

well if you're not doing anything like gaming that needs faster hdd speeds, I wouldn't worry about it. Typically people question whether to get 5400 over 4200, 7200 usually isn't a consideration. I personally would look at size over speed, but I have a lot of music and movies and stuff so that advice is kind of biased. Typically you see a big price jump from 80 to 100 though regardless of speed.

i think one thing that you should really make sure is how much cache the hard drive has. 2mb caches arent cutting it anymore for me.

in most laptops (not sure about dells) you can upgrade the hdd easily. I am getting a new laptop hdd from newegg for only $96. 60gb, 5400rpm, 8mb cache. you might want to keep that an an option ;)
