5400 vs 7200

Depends on how fast your processor is and how much memory you have. I run 7200 rpm SATA HDDs and they are 10x faster than the 5400 rpm EIDE HDD I replaced a year ago when I upgraded to a pentium m. They also make 10000 rpm HDDs but I really don't think they're worth it.
 
Unless you're playing high end games or transferring huge files you won't really know the difference, but yeah, go with the 7200. Any idea how much drive space you're looking for?
 
It makes no sense to buy a 5400RPM hard drive. Do they even make those anymore? Oh wait you're talking about a laptop. Get the 7200RPM anyway, better performance.
 
Yeah, this must be a laptop. The 7200 drive will be much faster but they don't come in as large sizes as 5400s do. You can get at least a 160GB 5400RPM drive but I don't think 7200s are over 100GB yet.

They dont make 7200RPM 500GB drives for laptops. And the 10K drives are only for desktops.

5400RPM is usually fine, 4200RPM is when you really notice a slow down. And also with a 7200, you will get lower battery life.
