For this rig, would a 550W seasonic ENERGY PLUS+80 PSU be good?

*I keep seeing people with lesser systems using 650W power supplies and more. why?

yeh that psu will power that card!!

people go for bigger psu's for a little headroom incase they decide to upgrade, if you decide to go crossfire you might have to consider a new psu so when you look at it like that

if your 100% that one card will always be in your system then fine but if there is a little doubt that you might buy another 5850 you have to consider the money wasted on having to upgrade

There is no upgrade capacity in that system with the intended PSU. Although (due to its EPS 2.91 design standard), it can theoretically deliver 4 x 18A rails, (72A) it is not the greatest quality psu. For example the MTFB is measured at 25oC, not 40oC.

What all this means is that it will work fine, but you will be running it reasonably hard all the time (lowers efficiency, especially in the US). This means you cannot make major upgrades without getting another larger PSU.

For the quality, upgradability, and stability, you need something more like this: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=n82e16817139005
