Hello all. My current setup: XFX 680i LT mobo, Intel Celeron 356 3.33ghz cpu, 2(2x1bg) gb ultra dual channel pc5300 ddr2, xfx 256mb 8600 gt xxx edition,Cooler Master 550w psu (2x12v rails w/ 16 amp max output on each rail).

I get low fps w/ new bargain games I've accumulated (NFS:Undercover, BIA:Hell's Highway, UT3, Quake 4).

I have been able to overclock my fsb from 533 to 667 mhz, giving a cpu frequency of 4.1## ghz. This didn't affect fps. My card is the culprit.

I would like to get a 5770 but maybe I'm aiming too high because of my cpu. I also hear that a solid 10% or more customers have bad driver issues constantly.
Another option is something like a 9800 gt or a 250. What in the market today card would be closest to my cpu's bottleneck range?

Throw away the celeron chip and get a better processor. Those games especially quake 4 were meant to be ran on pentium processors at least. You might think the celeron is fast at 4.1 ghz but really its not compared to a core 2 duo (or quad) if overclocked to 4.1 ghz.

My obsolete celeron...

All of the hardware wisemen I have talked with tell me my Celeron d356 cpu needs to be replaced. It seems I cannot find any decent socket 775 under $100 to replace it with(ebay, newegg,td,google). My main purpose in this thread is to find out whether I should risk using my cpu with a current mid-range gpu. Or should I replace my cpu first and foremost?

I want to keep my cpu, buy a gtx260 or something like that on ebay, and just experiment to see if I can get away with making these games playable. I hesitate however because I do not want to waste my money on a mid-range card that will be obsolete next year if my cpu bottlenecks it THAT BAD. I have been searching for weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeks. Forums are the last place I know. If I could have one wish...tech data on the Celeron d356 bottleneck range?? Not exactly sure how to say it.

Dont expect to find a fast processor (especially in the 775 socket) for less than 100 dollars. Save your money until you can afford this right here...

At least with C2D, you will note a significant improvement in speed vs getting a new video card with that celeron chip. It doesnt do you any good to get a good video card with a slow processor (marginal performance). In the end, you have to realize, something has got to give if you want better. And always remember, you get what you pay for. Im only setting you up for success rather than failure...

The ebay idea is not a bad idea but becareful though especially with used CPUs because if any of those pins are bent, i know you wont be happy. If you can afford option 3 about from newegg, go for it. We all like to dream. I have a goal of getting my computer built with the latest everything.

Get a CPU first. I would recommend an E6300. be warned, there are two E6300's. You want the 2.8ghz one, not the 1.86ghz one.

Here is the 2.8ghz one. $91 and free shipping!

That gives you $109 for a graphics card! Here is a nice graphics card, my brother has this particular card and it has better performance than a 512mb 3870:

And you have money to spare, maybe add a little extra and you can get a new PSU

Givin up

Thank you linkin93 for the ebay references. These would provide an immediate fix and allow me to play all of the games I currently have maxed or near max @1920x1200 on my 26". I do have temptations since its Christmas...

I also tend to want to hold out just a bit longer for Nvidia to iron-out the competition from the 5xxx series AMD gpus. They are way over priced right now because this product barely meets demand. I'm prepared to wait a month or two if it means I can play games like Crysis and Far Cry @1920x1200. 8 )) drool. As for the mean time I may go with 1gb4870:

And to attempt a build that can handle COD4 and Duke Nukem Foreverlolz: a core2 with twice as much cahe and overclockability::

I'd prefer these and I will most likely wait to get them or a 5770(easier on psu and Crysis-capable). Prices soon to drop it seems. I believe my psu can push a 4770 (don't know for how long) because I read a review and computed the card to consume around 24 amps under full load, which is OK IF my other components don't draw more than 8 amps.
(2 hard drives a dvd/burn drive and a cd drive)

Linkin, will the hardware you suggested suffice for Crysis?

Even the older E6300 1.86Ghz would probably kill that Celly,...Its not a bad processor.

But yeah definatly get the 2.8 version if you can!....or something better depending on your funds.

will his PSU be able to support that graphics card?
it has a max of 16amp output, and my 4850 requires 30amp... i think, so the 4870 should require atleast 30 amp right?

If i am mistaken please make sure you alert me and everyone else!

(it does say that there are 2 of the 12V rails though...)

550w psu w/ 4890

I can tell you I'd be pushing it. The two 12v rails combine to give 32 amps max.

I don't think I want to go this route. If I hold out just a bit longer, 40nm gpus will be abundant. They are much more efficient than current 55nm tech. You can already get one here:

I would rather hold out for something just a tad bit better and with good driver support. I ran 3dmark06 today. I scored 4740 with my 8600 gt @ 680mhz core/860mhz memory and my beloved celeron d @ 4.1667ghz :good:

*Nvidia 8600 gt's use 80nm tech.
