5850 Overclocking

Okay, so I'm OCing it right now, and I was sitting here stability testing it, and the temperate was up to 85c which didn't sound too good to me, but that's because the fan was on auto and it wouldn't go higher than 33... So when I put the fan on like 75 the temperature dropped tremendously. The only thing I'm worried about is, is it bad to run the fan at that high? Will it possibly lower the life-span of the card? If so I don't want to do that. Also, should I OC even further now if the card is at a really low temperature. I'm not worried about the sound because I used headphones most of the time, so I won't hear it.
 
i always run my fan at auto when just doing desktop stuff, but i just quickly turn on ccc and turn it up to 100% for playing games. easy way to do it (in my opinion).
 
Well, if that's what you do I would recommend getting MSI Burner, you can save profiles, then you can just switch super fast without changing any settings at all.

i was actually looking for something like that. can it make the fx buttons profile keys? that would be superb...
 
the f1, f2, etc. buttons. sorry, i just posted a reply with "hd 5xxx" in it so i wrote that. my mistake.
 
don't use Furmark for long. I use it for like 1 minute. I hate furmark it's really bad on ATI cards. Anyways, I use Crysis and Empire Total war to see if my GPUs are stable. Empire is really good for it because you can have up to 7000 men in a huge battle. And if that doesn't make the GPU crash then it is good to go.

These ATI chips don't really clock thier memory to well. What you are seeing is that the Card is now artifactig, even though you cannot see it, and is correcting the artifacting before sending the signal to your monitor, which is why you do not see and performance increase. Also it could be voltage related. you may need to go higher. The Core Clock speed will O.C. better than the memory on these cards. O.C. Takes a while. You should increase your clock until you hit a wall then back off a bit, Then do the same with the memory. When it is stable try increasing the voltage and doing the same thing again until your are happy with what you have.

what is a good program to increase/adjust voltage on a gpu? also, is there a place to find recommended voltages? i have a 5770 and want to know...

MSI Afterburner is what I use. Works great for me. From what I know 1.3 is the max safe voltage for the 5xxx series. I would just not go any higher than that. There are not really recommended voltages for clocks because it all depends on the GPU. Yours may be worse or better than another at the same voltage so you just have to play around with it.

ok cool. thanks. i have been only getting relatively small overclocks (in my opinion). i will have to play around with it.
 
I am using MSI Afterburner right now. Ive tried rivatuner and what not like everyone else say to, but it's garbage and to big complex for a simple fix. MSI after burner is great, simple and clean (you can also save profiles as well, and set them to start at different times).

idk about you but my 5850 out clocks a 5870 and temps stay LOW. I have the asus 5850 with the voltage tweak. I run it at 1.26 volts 950 core clock and 1200 memory clock with the fan at 48%! It stays quiet and jams through 3dmark06. the temps stay at about 50C give or take, even in games.

Imagine if I ran that sucker at 10% or even 70% fan speed =]

The voltage teak is the secret to the high settings and low temps.
