5870 eyefinity 6 edition price

Found this this morning.

Around $700, is it worth it?

I'll be running four monitors, three of which will be a "display group". But I could also get a normal 5870 with a active display port adapter, for grouping three displays, and a secondary weaker card for that fourth monitor: total cost around $575. hmmm...

hmmm those don't go together :P

I wouldn't spend that much on just a 5870 i'd rather just get 2

No, I'm definitely a gamer ;)

I'm more familiar with Nvidia, could you tell me more about CF. It does support multiple monitors on multiple card like SLI does right?
 
I have my doubts that card is even in stock there, and instead are trying to make some money on preorders. Wait for major retail outlets such as newegg, ncix, tiger, and zzf to get it in stock.

crossfire is basically sli. i don' know specifically what the differences are but they are the equivalencies. ati's new drivers support crossfire eyefinity and multiple monitors. $700 is ridiculous! i would never pay that much. just get two 5850's. crossfire should be more than a 5870. plus then it looks cooler in your case :)
 
Can the 5850 have three monitors if you use an active DisplayPort->DVI like the 5870 can?

EDIT: If I get two 5850, I'd like to be able to connect three of my monitors on one card to create a "display group" and have my fourth monitor on the other card as a secondary display. Would I be able to do that ok?

to my understanding, one 5850 support 3 monitor, in crossfire mode would be upto 6 monitor

Well that's pretty much perfect. But I think what I'll do is get the 5870, and get another one later to do the same thing.

EDIT: If eyefinity and multiple monitors works with CF and all that, getting two normal 5870 is better than getting a pricey 5870 eyefinity 6 edition.

IIRC Eyefinity does not support crossfire on current generation cards. The new eyefinity 6 card will be the first to support eyefinity in crossfire i think.
 
Yes, I think you right, I heard the same

EDIT: Actually I think it might work, but only if you connect the 3 monitors to one card. It's hard to tell, alot of people say one thing then other people say something else.

Thought I'd post this, I contacted AMD to see if they would answer my questions, they answered pretty satisfactorily. This was my original question:

As long as you do not enable CrossFire in the Catalyst Control Center software you would be able to run the 4th display off of the second card. If CrossFire is enabled you cannot run any displays on the second card.

You cannot make monitors on the second card part of the same group as displays on the first card.

The 6 output cards can be paired with another HD5K series but you will hit a limit of about 8 displays working at any one time. The 6 output cards are also mini display port connections. They will have the same limitation as the 3 output cards do with respect to passive and active dongles. Ideally 6 native DP monitors should be used with these cards.

For the Eyefinity groups the displays must be at the same resolution and refresh rate, you cannot mix monitors that do not support a common res/ref.
