6 y/o Desktop - Lots of BSODs

Hello, hello!

My brother built me a desktop around 6 (or 7) years ago and it's worked phenomenally for the duration of it's life, up until a year or so ago. Since then I've gotten a lot of BSODs as well as it just freezing on or after startup without a BSOD or explanation.

I clean it regularly (dusting), as well as run defrag every week, last I checked it's got no malware nor viruses. I'm assuming at this point it's just old and a couple parts need replacing.

By the way, I play a lot of video games which I'm assuming after time takes its toll. Lots of LoL, Skyrim, etc etc. The fan is also always ridiculously loud, I'm not sure if that's important or not but anyhoo...

Windows 7 Home Premium
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 945 Processor 3.00 GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 4.00 GB (3.25 usable)
System type: 32-bit Operating System

I'm not sure what else to share. Any questions will be answered promptly. I'm no computer whiz, hence my posting here.

Should I just replace some parts? If so what parts need replacing?

Have you reinstalled the OS? I'd do that first to see if it helps. When you say you dust it, do you take it apart and blow it out with compressed air or just dust the outside? You mention that you play games, do you have a dedicated video card or is it integrated?

Don't reinstall windows just yet. We can run a program that will tell us whats going on about the bluescreens.

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

What fan is loud? Video card fan or cpu fan?

it could be a number of things, fact that its 7 years old, bad drivers etc. it would be good to re-install windows on the machine.

most likely its the RAM or GPU due to its age. it might not be running much RAM and gpu usage on general use but on startup and running larger programs it might then have a problem and BSOD. id run memtest x86 or the desktop version: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Memory-Tweak/MemTest.shtml

i doubt it will be the cpu.

to be fair it would be much needed for you to build a new computer if you have the money. its quite some old equipment there and you would notice a massive difference in performance although the processor itself isnt too bad but a current stock i7 3770k - i5 4690k would be around 3x better performing than the current one you have. even an AMD processor like an AMD fx-8350 would be a massive improvement.

not to mention im guessing you have DDR2 ram, old gpu and slow HDD. overall even a cheap few hundred £ machine would be a vast improvement.

I have a feeling this is a ram issue. Have you ever used memtest to test your ram? Download and create the memtest cd or usb flash drive here.

So I've been running memtest for the past hour or so, and there've been no errors reported. I'm running 2 windows so they can test 1098 MB of RAM each, and both have gone through multiple passes of testing.

I'm assuming this means that (so far, unless I let it continue and it still finds no errors) there's nothing wrong with the RAM?

What I would do is run memtest on each individual stick separately.

Also, lets get some more data from some of those minidump files.

Don't give up on it yet. I have a 955be that's easily 5-6yrs old and still running strong. Not long ago a stick of ram failed on me but G-skill replaced the whole kit for free. That and a cheap CD drive is all I have had to replace since building it.

Is there any way possible for you to use different sticks of ram? Some of those are saying memory corruption. It also may help to remove the ram sticks and blow out the slots and then reinsert ram sticks.
