<600$ New Rig

Im building a pc for my brother. I prefer intel but if there are better amd deals I can change my mind. Basically I need the whole pc with monitor, mice, and keyboard and I have less then 600 to spend. It has to come down to less than 600 with shipping.
 
a good cheaper cpu is pentium d. i think u can get on at 2.8GHZ for around $100. 2gb of ram u can get for about $70. hdd u can get a 80GB SATA for about $60. u can get any kinda case for around $30-40. tiger direct has 17-19" lcds for about $120. u can get any keyboard/mouse combo for around $30. then i would recommend getting a 7950GT for around $150 i think. that totals to about $570, but thats without shipping. and all of that stuff can be found at tiger direct. tiger direct has a few stores, so you might get lucky, and not have to pay shipping.

My god, your sig is EXACTLY the computer I was thinking of building, lol.

And $600 for everything including Monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, shipping, is a very tight budget. It can be done, but....
 
 
sorry I forgot to add. This computer is for web browsing and homework stuff. He is not into games and will use this computer for school. I rather get some outdated stuff. He is 11 so for him a good looking computer is better than a better performing computer. Dont need a OS
 
I think Froboy is on the right track with his build. The AMD X2's will give a lot better value at that price point than any Intel chips.

If your brother will not be running Vista, he could probably do just fine with 1 Gig RAM. Also, you can usually find better deals on 19" LCD's in the circular ad's at places like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.

If he doesn't need a burner, you can save another 15 dollars by just getting a DVD/CD Rom drive instead of burner. Newegg has several DVD Rom drives for 17.99. I'm doing a build for our 11 year old son, and just putting a reader in it. If he needs to burn something, he can use my computer. I doubt he'll need that functionality often though.

I took a quick look at Tom's Hardware. Looked at 3800+ X2 vs. Intel DC 2140. 3800+ smokes the 2140 and is $11 cheaper.

3800+ only performs much better on 3dmarks06

But in real world application they are neck to neck, you will barely see any difference between these two processors

And the reason why I posted for him an Intel build is because he prefer Intel

Uhh...Pent D blows.... I think he should go with the Core architectured Pentium Dual-Cores or an Allendale C2D E4400...
