60c idle for 4890?

Hey guys,

My 4890 is running 60c idle.....would you consider this to be safe? ive not seen what it goes up to when gaming, but a rough guess id say at least 80-85c maybe more?

Thats stock 4890 clocks aswell...

I know about the fan speed thing, however i leave it to auto because if i raise it anymore it sounds like a helicopter taking off lol.

I was thinking about replacing the cooler,But still ive not seen a cooler that is 100% guaranteed to fit the 4890....most people have said that if it fits the 4870 then it will fir the 4890,Then someone else said you might have to modify the VRM heatsink by taking some off the corner to fit some coolers  :D

Ohhhhh....That is kinda hot but ATI cards run like that. I had 4850 which was 72C idel and about the temperature of the sun after 10 mins load. Obviously it is not ideal but I think the max safe temperature for this card would be around 100C. I ran 4850 at 110C in game and the game run just fine, although some of the plastic casing was melted.

dam thats a litle hot, have you ever taken the plastic case off the gpu to see if the fan/heatsink has a build up of dust?

Its not uncommon for 4890s to run that hot. I have seen plenty idle around 55-60C by buddys was idling at 70C but he went to water cooling. I wouldn't worry about it to much but if it was me I would put the fan at 80%+ when gaming to keep it from getting to hot. Have you replaced the thermal past on it? Thats the first thing I would do and clean the dust out.

Your 4850 must of been bad or you have bad airflow. Mine is idle at 45C right now and that is with the fan speed at 45% at 100% it gets around 35C idle. I have never seen my temps go above 65C while gaming.

Oh what you need to do is remove the cooler and reapply the thermal paste. The ones from the manufacturers are known to have crappy thermal paste.

Nope i havnt, although looking at it it doesnt look all that dusty tbh,but then again i cant see inside the cooler so it could well be a bit clogged up.

Ive not had any issues with the card at all, even at those temps...but i just want to avoid any problems heat related down the line.

When i game i turn all my case fans to high anyway as i have a fan controller connected to all my fans....then when im just browsing the net i turn them right down.

Hmm....worth a try i suppose...wil Artic cooling MX-2 do? Thats all i have lying around, although i think its a year old lol....might not be any good now.

I still might try and find an aftermarket cooler though.

This is the temp it goes to idle with all my fans turned up to full whack,Plus the 4890 cooler full after 5 mins....But its like a Hoover lol,No good for that late night gaming.

EDIT: 40C now lol.

Call me dumb...but i take it those pads can only be used with watercooling right? or could they be used if i got an aftermarket gpu cooler?

And 24c idle on your 5850 ...thats great!

they are aimed at air cooling in the instructions it mentions heatsinks and fans no water cooling mentioned, if done correctly they say it can knock about 5c off the best thermal compound available...

you have to run the cpu hot for a couple of mins, drop down the fan speed to lowest then stress your gpu for a min or so then increase your fan speed too 100% for a few mins!

you do that once then set your fan speed to automatic

well the accelero turbo pro is designed for the 4890 and guaranteed to work. once I removed the dust from my 4890, which used to idle at 55C (950 core, 1015 mem overclock though), my temps went down to 35C idle and 45C max load. get some compressed air and blow out the dust first, then come back and tell us ur temps.

Hmm might get some of those!!!

ahh yes....one thats finally confirmed to fit the 4890!!! tks, quite cheap too only £30!

Is it quiet?

I'd suggest pulling the stock heatsink off the card, cleaning out the dust, and reapplying thermal grease before looking at an aftermarket cooler. Generally, there is far too much thermal interface material on the cards when they come from the factory, in reality you need a little bit less than you would use on a cpu.

Well like i said i do have some MX-2 so i might give that a go and see what it does to temps,Is MX-2 okay for a GPU?

yeah no problem. get some compressed air and blow it out as well. that made my card cooler and should make urs cooler as well. do that then tell us the results

Right ive just took out my 4890...on closer inspection i see that the ram chips have Thermal pads on them....i do not have any new ones of these, and i take it i cant use thermal paste on them lol.

What me do? :D

Ive not took the heatsink off yet,so its okay.

Thermal pads need not be replaced generally.

yeh but for £2 its worth doing!!

if there is enough pressure on the pads with the heat etc they fray, i have just done 2 graphics cards and a couple of the smaller chips (dont know what they where) had frayed thermal pads on them and i didnt want to re-use it

Well i was thinking that, because ive seen alot of cards, even high end ones that dont have any cooling on the memory chip....so it shouldnt make any diffrence?

Even my 8800GT didnt have any....and that was fine.
