64 bit and 32 bit

Hi everyone :]
So I'm getting a new computer. I'll give the specs first:
CPU: Intel Core i7 965 Extreme Edition
Motherboard: Asus Rampage II Extreme
GPU: Dual SLI nVidia 295 GTX's
RAM: Corsair TR3X6G2000C8GTF Dominator GT 6 GB DDR3
PSU: CORSAIR 1000w HX Series 12v ATX SLI Ready 80 Plus Certified Power Supply

Anyway, besides me showing off my supercomputer I had a question :]
Because I want to benefit from my computer, I want a 64 bit OS. I was thinking Windows XP 64 bit. But the problem is that alot of software isn't compatible with 64 bit. So I was wondering if there is an option in Windows XP 64 bit that you can run a program in 32 bit? Or is there something hardware-related holding it back?

Thanks in advance :)

XP x64 is junk to be honest, for that hardware I'd actually get Vista x64. All of the software I've run is compatible with 64 bit, most of it is 32 bit native! It's totally automatic too, it'll even install it in an x86 program files directory.

Yeah but I've heard that Vista x64 is very unstable. And from experience Vista is just very annoying. That's why I've switched back to XP now. But you mean that you installed 32 bit software, onto a 64 bit OS? And there's no bugs or anything?

incorrect, vista x64 is no more or no less stable than x86. i ran it until the windows 7 release candidate came out, and had very few problems, nothing that couldn't be resolved.

what annoyed you about it? just curious

also, have you considered just downloading the windows 7 releasce candidate, it's free to try until it expires June 1st 2010. you can download it here

When it first came out, sure, but since SP1 came out and developers made patches/updates for software that enhance stability, Vista has been a lot more stable.

The only real reason that people says Windows xp pro x64 is junk is because of the other software manufactures refuse to make updates for it. But if you want to try Vista, I heard the Ultimate is the best to get. But I really like the Windows 7. But my main OS is xp pro x64. And to the people that says it is junk, I wonder if they actually ran the program.

Absolutely untrue. I use it and it's perfect. There's nothing I've wanted to run that I can't.

Both Vista x64 and XP x64 have 32bit emulators built into the OS, so when you install a 32bit application, it sets it up automatically.

The only thing "annoying" about Vista is UAC, and that's there for your own good.

Doesn't anyone notice that the guy says 6GB of RAM?

Go for windows x64 , an x86 OS won't recognize more than 4GB of RAM

You don't want to run a beta OS as your primary operating system.

I do :P
