i'm sick of windows, especially with the outlook of vista....so i'm looking to switch to linux, but figured i'd ask about a 64 bit linux version first so i could take advantage of my dual processors and also the 4 gig of ram. so i need to know if i can accomplish that on linux. i seem to remember it has alot of command line stuff, and was hoping it had evolved a bit since then. thoughts?

It has gotten a ton better in the past year. Pretty much all linux distros are 64bit. You don't need a 64bit distro to utilize dual cores btw, just the 64bit architecture. Anyways, some good starter linux distros are
Ubuntu
Fedora Core 8
OpenSuse 10.3
PcLinuxOS

They are all very good in their own ways. I would try Ubuntu first, and if you don't like it move down the list until your find one that "suits" you best, but ubuntu is a great distro.

ok, so i can format the disk from the ubuntu install so i don't have windows anymore? is there a way to keep my data but still get rid of windows? i have a 500gb hdd, single partition.

Ubuntu has a built in partitioner that will allow you to resize the windows partition and create some free space for ubuntu. You can select what % of your hard drive you want to use for windows and for ubuntu.
