I have heard about some compatibility issues with 64 bit Windows XP. The article on this was written some time ago, so is this still an issue?
64 Bit XP, or 32 Bit?

It is and always will be. I don't MS ever really revised x64 after it's release. A few patches I'm sure but never "really" fixed it. Unless you're running specialized 64bit software, stick with 32bit windows for now. Vista might be better, but I still think it's too early for ANY version of Vista 
There are always compatibility issues seen between each different version of Windows. 64bit is a different platform where many 32bit applications simply are not going to run despite the 32bit support included. To see 64bit OSs replace 32bit OSs and softwares/games alike will take a little longer then it took 32bit to replace 16bit. Between 95's OSR2 and NT that saw 16bit and dos days soon come to an end to the greater degree as well as 16bit Windows.
Yea I agree to a point, they should have learned from XP of having 32 and 64bit-should I get this one or that one-this will run on that one but not this one. 64bit processors have been around for a long time now. They should force feed everybody and just went Vista 64 and adding alot better backward support. Nobody saw 16 and 32bit 98 - ME and 2000 cds.

I already have a free copy of XP x64 that my uncle gave me, so I'll try it out and go back to XP if I need to.
i ran x64 on my laptop for a while, it's slightly faster, but i could NOT get my sound card to work, so i scrapped it and went back to x86
the only app i was using that actually took advantage of x64 was 7zip x64, which WAS much faster than winrar, but none of my other programs that i use are x64, so it wasn't worth going without sound

64bit for servers, and 32bit for desktops. 64bit isn't worth the headaches quite yet.
It's still going to take a few years before you see a good number of 64bit desktop apps before even considering the game market. The 64bit for what it is steps up a notch from 32bit which has been around for over 12yrs. at this time originally seen with Windows NT. For servers and business at this time would be the direction there. For desktops just walk into the software section of a retail store. You'll see Windows 64bit(XP/Vista) sitting in a sea of 32bit apps and games which just happens to include the 32bit OSs as well.
