Is dual-core supported for SP1? Or do I need to upgrade to SP2? If I don't have to I'd rather not cuz of all the bad things I heard about it.

Are there any programs to check to make sure everything on my new computer is running right? Dual cores, dual channel RAM at correct speed, etc

TIA!

Easy way to check, if you're already setup, press CTRL-ALT-DEL, then find any process and right click > Set Affinity. If you see both cores there, you're all good.

Either way, why not upgrade? It's best to keep your Windows fairly up to date.

sorry, yes, xp sp1

is there a program to check this?

i only ask cuz it seems that running multiple programs at once is about the same speed as with my 3 yr old pentium 4

There are some drivers you can load for dual core. I can't tell a huge difference in performace, but some in games. Mostly, older games that run on only single core chips(such as Need For Speed Most Wanted) aren't as jumpy.
