Why does my win 8 pro 64-bit pc show only 6gb of ram in dxdiag, I upgraded to win 8 pro 64-bit to have 8gb of ram and it gives me only 6gb...

Windows reserves some for itself.
Otherwise, If you have 2gb sticks, one might not be inserted properly. Probably windows though.

Do you have a graphics card with shared video memory? If so that could account for the missing 2GB.

Whether it is consumed or not, if you right click on computer and go properties the computer information that comes up should show the correct amount.

No, if you haven't noticed my specs are in my signature... :)

Have you made sure memory remapping is off in the BIOS?

Have you tried this-

Click start-
type-msconfig
select "boot"
Advanced options
untick the box,Or tick it and put in your maximum memory which would be "8192"

Sometimes it will tell you "hardware reserved" for me if I don't manually set the clock speed and latency settings manually in my motherboard for the RAM. What it defaults too is always wrong and I have to set it myself. Try that. Also try reseating all the memory sticks or trying different slots. Also +1 to what Nev said.

That gave me an idea, since this is triple channel ram and I am using three 2gb sticks and three 1gb sticks, I might have put them in in the wrong order and some of them don't work, so I guess I'll try re-arranging them, but how should I put them in to make them work properly? can you write what order should I put them in... starting from the cpu going to the right edge of the motherboard  (it's an msi x58m)

If you have six slots then put 3 matching sticks in alternating slots. Will look like this

3-1-3-1-3-1

or this

1-3-1-3-1-3

Remapping must be enabled. Today it is usually enabled by default with no option to disable it. Only if you are running 32bit OSes without support for more than 4GB, must it be disabled.

I'll try that, now the only problem is how to figure out which ones are which... they only have a long serial number on them but I guess I'll find out what they are when I google it... :D

Okay, I think I just found my problem... I go into dxdiag after re-arranging the memory and it still shows up only 6gb, I go to the display tab and my gts 250 has 3003mb of memory... how? why is it "eating" my pc's ram? I thought it only has the dedicated 512mb...? Can I change that

It is called Nvidia Turbocache. It has dedicated 512MB and then steals what else it needs from the system.

I don't know if it can be controlled or disabled. 2GB does seem a bit much when you aren't even doing 3D tasks at the desktop.

God here we go again. A 64 bit OS should allow for all 8GB of system memory to be available regardless of the video or any other memory dedication.

Ensure you bios settings set correctly, and your RAM is seated properly.
