64bit OS question?

main difference is that x64 lets you use more than 3.5GB of RAM. on a 32 bit OS you can't use any more than 3.5GB of RAM but on 64 bit you can use up to something stupid like a few hundred GB, so it is, in personal computing terms, unlimited.

There are also different drivers for 64 bit OS. The majority of software is signed for 32 bit OS but not 64, however most new software is now signed for 64bit aswell because it is becoming more popular with a mid range computer now having 4GB of RAM. Hardware needs different drivers but all hardware that is made now is suitable for 64 bit use. Anything from P4/First dual core procesors onwards can be used with 64 bit operating systems. the AMD athlon 64 is called so because it is workable with 64 bit OS, sometehing novel when it first came out.

Finally the file order is slightly different on 64 bit OS. On Vista for example, you will probably know that in c:\ there is the file of "prgram files" . On 64 bit vista there is "program files" and, the more commonly used by programs, "program files x86" . It puts all programs that have 64 bit and 32 bit versions (most programs do but don't say, it just does it itself in it's programming) in the x86 folder. So you will find that the x86 will look like the program file folder in a 32 bit OS and the "program files" folder will look pretty empty

What is the diference betwen 32bit and 64bit??? is a 64bit OS faster or WHAT????

i went from Vista Home premium 32 bit to Vista Ultimate X64 and it seems to run alot faster than the 32 bit did.

If your planning on getting vista then get the X64 bit,but i do recommend you wait for windows 7 :good:

I went to microsoft and looked at the highlights of Windows 7. Even checked on the beta but said too late. When is this to be released?
thanks

So far as i know there is no release date or projected release date as of yet, but because beta has been conducted and finished i would guess, after a few creases have been ironed out, late summer-mid autumn. If they have alot of problems maybe even early next year. I doubt that thought because of how long it has been in developement and because it is so close to finish.

A later copy from the beta got leaked on some torrent sites though, so that may suggest that they are extremely close to finish, so expect it in the coming months

Ummm.......why would anybody want a beta release from torrent? Don't know. Even then the security is so tight ya can't get any security, critical updates, then why would ya want it in the 1st place. Oh well.

It wasn't the beta that was on the torrent, that was a free public thing. About a week ago now they accidently leaked a further, nearly complete and fully working version, it's like how office 2007 was leaked in the "microsoft office enterprise blue edition" . It was the one brought out before the others and given to certain microsoft workers. It got leaked and because it was given to office workers no activation or anything was needed, why would there be, it was given to people from the company that made it, they have already payed. So alot of people got it for free like the microsoft workers did and it still gives updates etc like a normal copy but again, as i say, because it doesn't neede any kind of validation or activation it bypasses everything fine. I'd imagine that the leaked Windows 7 will be a similar situation
