64bit upgrade?

I bought the $40 windows 8 pro upgrade, when I got it my laptop had a 32 bit processor (1.8ghz solo T1350) I upgraded my processor recently (2ghz duo T7200) and let me say it was completely worth the $20.

My question is, can I reinstall the 64 bit version of windows with the same product key? I know I will lose everything on it, but thats fine. I didn't buy the dvd's so I will have to download it, I still have the email with the download link.

I want to do this because I have 4gb ram and it will only recognize 2.99. If I am wrong correct me, but that is because it's 32bit right?

Yes, the keys work with either 32 or 64 bit.

The machine will recognize up to 4GB of RAM with 32-bit, but the machine can also affect how much RAM Windows will see. My old desktop only sees 3.5GB of RAM with 64-bit.

ok, thanks, I was thinkng 32 was supposed to see 4gb, it may be my laptop too, I hate to say it, but it's pretty old... haha. next time I get an excuse to do so, I will reinstall.

Yeah your going to enjoy the performance boost difference from 32 Bit to 64 Bit on the CPU end.

So there will be a performance difference, I talked to someone else about it and they made it sound like there wasn't much of a performance difference other than the ram

When it comes to ram you won't notice a difference between 64 bit and 32 bit until you go over 4 GB of memory. 32 Bit will see up to 3.5 GB where as 64 Bit can see up to 4 GB but typically due to the bios on ever laptop I have owned the computer only recognizes 3.5 to 3.8 GB anyway no matter if your running 32 bit or 64 bit.

The CPU you will notice nice performance boost, for me a few years back when I went from a 32 bit Linux OS to a 64 bit same Linux OS the performance was noticeable.

cool, I might do it sooner than I thought because for some reason my pictures and documents shortcuts under libraries aren't working... I haven't looked into it, I just go to C then to users then to me then to whatever I'm going for...

did it

I did the upgrade (to 64bit 8.1), I like it so far, it fixed the little shortcut issue (although not the only solution I'm sure) I fixed some other little issues that were bothering me with it too (Like the touch pad not scrolling until after you took you're finger off)
This is the only problem that I don't know what to do with:
No matter what screen saver I use, every once in a while, it will lock up, the fan usually picks up, the screen saver stops moving, and sometimes, when it does this, when you move the mouse, it sits at a dark blue screen for a second before going back to where ever it was. Just annoying.

I am also having an issue with my lexmark wireless printer not printing from this laptop... probably just a driver problem, which is common with this printer. if I can't figure that out on my own I'll be back...

(intel t7200 (2ghz core2duo) 945gm graphics, latest drivers- tried windows and intel versions. 4gb ram (but really only 3) 60gb intel 330series ssd 64 bit windows 8 pro w/media center )

Windows 8.1 is having several driver issues, just check with Lexmark to see if they offer a new driver for you.

thanks for the replies... its still working great... I haven't had any time what-so-ever to do anything, so as far as I know I still can't print from this computer, and I haven't seen the screensaver issue recently, although I can't even remember the last time I even saw the screensaver on this laptop... maybe after finals and during Christmas break I'll have some time (I doubt it though)
