64bit Windows XP vs 64bit Windows Vista

I'm getting a new computer soon and I was wondering which one I should go for, performance wise and compatibility wise, as I will have 4 GBs on my new computer and will not be able to take full use of it with a 32bit OS.

Go with Vista and get the upgrade for 7 simply because XP-64 has horrible driver support.

Well, leaving the 64bit XP aside, would it be better for me performance-wise to go vista 64 rather than the 32bit XP? (With 4 gb, probably limiting it to 3.5 in the 32bit)

If you've got the hardware, there's no question that 64bit Vista is faster
than 32bit XP.

I've dual booted both on my i7 920 machine and Vista
is hands down quicker. Programs load faster, initial boot is faster, etc.

Plus the search indexing is amazing. Ever searched for a file in XP?

This is my experience.

I would take 64bit Vista over 32bit XP any day.

You know, I always wonder about people saying bad driver support for Windows XP Pro x64. I have been running it for 2 yrs now. And it is the most stable system that I ever had.
I rather have it over Vista, but I do love that Windows 7 x64. Except of little problems with that to. Windows 7 can't find my sandisk u3 flash drives and my creative webcam will not work in Windows 7. Not windows fault, Creative says it will have drivers out for it in the 3rd Quarter of this year.
It is not Windows xp x64 problem that there is no driver support. It is the hardware and software companies that have the problem. When I was looking for drivers for my old logitech web cam, they told me that they didn't support that camera any longer and to buy a new one. But hardly any companies had web cams for a x64 bit os, including Vista.
And any of you guys out there actually ran xp x64, or just repeating something that someone else says.

my opinion

I have two hard drive one with x64 XP and the other with Vista x64. I really like vista over xp now but if I have some older hardware like printer etc I use xp since vista does'nt support it. I am tired of even looking at xp since i moved to vista as it is very cosmetically appealing. I have a dual core I think xp loads up faster than vista but not by a great margine. It works fine the only things i donot like is that it does not have the "move to" or "copy to" function like xp but it is easilty fixed with a web search and download fix. Dreamscene is very nice but it uses 10-20 % cpu when ideing which doesnt effect my Phenom x2 hardly at all. I have 4 gig of ram vista uses about 750mb at idle since i shut off the "search index" service. Overall i am happy with vista x64 is nice i would shut off the annoying "are you sure" pop up box that questions you everytime you click an icon. I would chose vista over xp as it is very nice when you get it set up the way you like.
