Have 600-700 bux to spend and already have tower/power supply/mouse/keyboard/monitor. Machine will be built with gaming as the main focus.

I currently have:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
3.0 GB Ram
GeForce 8800 GT
ultra500atx power supply

Priorities (in my opinion) are 1. cpu/mobo 2. ram 3. vid card

Overclocking is something I probably will not entertain, while i would like the option to upgrade in the future.

Any comments/suggestions on that i should look at buying??

also can you tell us the exact tower ans psu just so we know what will fit or if they need to be changed or something.

Assuming your case is ATX compatible, I'll leave this closer to the $650 mark for Memory, Board, CPU, GPU, and PSU, and then leave extra in case a new case is required.

CPU/Board:

Memory:

PSU: Great price on this unit right now, especially with the rebate considered

GPU:
If you prefer the ATI Side of things, the 6870 is good bang for the buck:

Nvidia, the 560 is also excellent bang for the buck:

or

With the ECS 560, that would put you at $654.95 before rebates, shipping, tax, etc, could fit in a cheaper ATX Mid Tower as well if need be and still be under $700 ;)

this one has the other stuff that you need, his was good but left out the hdd, os, and a dvd drive, so this might be a little better in the long run, if you can spend the extra bit first i'd go for a gtx560ti, then i'd go for an aftermarket cooler and overclock the crap outa this thing, i picked the 970 cuz it is from a higher yeilding batch so it will go further at lower temps than a 955, but otherwise you can save the 15 for that 955 or 965

you never did tell us what the psu u got was, and also this ends at 693 before mir, and 673 after, so it is a little over but it will do great.

actually i forgot the ram, so with the ones he posted after mir that'll put you a little over budget, but with the perfered accounts you get like 12 months interest free payments or something like that.

thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

A friend of mine is the technical guy, so I am going to forward this to him. He just doesn't keep up with all the hardware upgrades as much as others. So your input will be very helpful.

I do need a OS, btw. But I will just buy that on top of everything else, or if my friend thinks I can cut back on something a little, I might do that too. He was suggesting Windows 7. Any thoughts on that?

As far as my tower, its from a Dell Dimension 9100. Not sure if that helps.

With these, i get a price of 870 before rebat. Am I missing something?
350 + 60 + 70 + 200 + 190 = 870

there was prob a sale at the time or something, it's been a little while, and also may want to buy win7 oem 64-bit now cuz it's 20 off for 80 instead of 100

balls... i missed the sale.

if you are willing to give another post with recent stuff, i will be sure to check it immediately.

if not, i will work with what you have.

regardless, thx allot for the input!

Johnny,

I purchased exactly everything on your list. Ordered it a few moments ago. Thx for the help.

I am currently in a Dell Dimension 9100 case. Do you see a problem cramming this stuff into that case? And do you see a potential cooling problem?

If so, any suggestions on parts that I might want to look into?

Also, the hard drive i have is the one that came with this dell 9100 5 years ago. Is buying all this stuff worthless if my hard drive is the same one i got years ago?

thx

well the hdd is just how fast it will load, then it goes into the ram so it will be accessed faster, and with this ram you will be beyond fine.

and idk about the dase, as long it is a normal desktop and has a decent amount of room from the back to the hdd cage then you'll be fine.

The only problem you may have is the case connections to the mobo from the dell case. They usually have the power and usb connections in the same connector so you will have a tough time figuring that out if its the case here with that specific model of dell case.

its done!

Well, I ordered all those parts you suggested (thx again), and my 2 friends helped me put it together...which is basically saying they put it together as I sat there thumbing my nuts.

Anyways, they did a SICK job on it, and I will post pics soon.

I never realized that hiding wires and making as good as an airflow you can get was important, but they claim it is, so they have enough air flow that you can fit a stampede of elephants through my case without touching any wires.
