will a 128mb 6600gt outperform a 9800xt 256 mb?

Yes, but if you don't use AA (more than 2x) and AF the 6600GT will perform better most if not everytime. Those times the XT is ahead it is by 1-2FPS.
I didn't mean to imply the 9800XT would beat the 6600GT a lot, although reading my last post it may have come out that way.

Also, the 6600GT is the more 'modern' card of the two, so if your planning on buying one of them go with the 6600GT, IMO.
