but you can flash the 6950 to be a 6970. google that too

the 6950 is a good bit better and you can't flash them any more, there might be one or 2 models capable of doing it but almost all the reference model cards that could unlock/flash are long gone.

Why do you say that? You can flash any of them. The only difference is they took the switch off alot of them. If you get a bad flash you cant switch it back to the backup bios, so you take a chance it can kill the card. But there are still some with the switch.

a non-reference card cant be flashed. for instance, my 6950 from msi is non-reference, doesnt have a switch, and since the pcb is built differently, flashing the bios wouldnt work.

Yes it will. It just doesnt have a backup bios and switch. You can still flash them just like the others. But if the card cant handle it your kinda screwed. The chance you take if you try it.
