6950 conversion to 6970

It wont work unless you have a reference board. the downside is you can brick your gpu. The upside is you unlock pixel piplelines or shaders, making it a faster card. I would do it, but it is risky.

Do you have a card that has a dual BIOS switch? If you do then flip it to the unlocked and flash to this BIOS:

Using the 6970 BIOS can hurt the card in the long run. There are different voltages and timings on the memory of the 6970. The BIOS that I linked to you has the shaders unlocked but keeps the settings the same for the 6950 timings and voltages.

EDIT: you do have the 2gb model right?

Is this your card?

It looks to me that it does not have the dual BIOS like the other reference models. So I am guessing that yours will not unlock or at least it will be a bigger risk to try to unlock. Without the BIOS switch there is a chance that the update could go wrong and you can brick your card. I would hold off on trying to flash the card. The 6950 is a beast of a card anyway. No need to risk it for a few more FPS.

Just my opinion. If you want to that is your call.

I was just curious if there were any risks, but shortened lifespan and risk of brick doesnt sound worth it. I'm planning on getting a 2nd for cfx. Hows Bville? I'm from AV just moved to Duluth for work.

Edit: That is the card btw

I had an XFX 6950 2GB and unlocked the shaders ONLY ,to be honest there really was not much performance increase, and about 4 months later my card failed...you would be better just overclocking.

I don't know if someone said it but a lot of the ATI cards come with a backup bios, its a small switch on the card, you flash it, doesn't work, flip the switch back to a 6950. I tried to do mine but not a good bios for my brand, good luck.

i was wondering what that switch was. i saw it on my 6970 but it was right next to the x-fire connectors, being that theres 2 connectors, i thought the switch was for if im using 1 or both crossfire ports.
