7200?-10,000? the price?

iam planning on buying and building a system at the end of April and i am wondering about a 10,000 rpm drive. I was planning on getting a 320gb seagate running at 7200rpm with a 16mb chache but I always wanted a 10,000rpm drive. I am planning on using my computer for gaming, music burning movie burning etc...
specs:
Proccessor-E6600
Video card-EVGA 7950 gt KO
Mobo-EVGA 680i SLI
Case-NZXT Lexa
Burner-Samsung SH-S182 DVD+RW 18X8X16 DVD-RW 18X6X16 DL-8X DVD Writer IDE Lightscribe Black OEM W/ Software( is this a good dvd burner, I want a fast burner... what dictates fast burning?)
RAM-OCZ platinum rev.2 2gb kit

If i did get a 10,000rpm drive I would probably by a 150gb WD Rapter

and then i buy another later on and put them in raid (0+1? the one that is safe but fast, it mirrors the other drive i believe/ i dont know much about raid.) thankyou in advance for any sugggestions, i do not know much about hard drives (i know the basics, at least i think i do) so some suggestions might have to be explaned or drawn out:)

yes go for the 10k drive you'll probably not regret it... a lot of people also reccomend the 15k drives, but their small and WAYWAY too expensive...

is the 10,000 rpm drive really worth the cost. $260 for 150gb/10000rpms vs. $170 500gb/7200rpm
what advantages would i see in a 10,000rpm drive vs 7200rpm drive?
 
I guess just having a fast computer,... would a 7200 rpm drive with 16mb chache be that much slower?
 
yes, it will be slower

but unless you're using a program that needs that extra speed, it will make 0 difference

99% of the programs your actively using on your pc are entirely held in ram, and if they require any hard-drive activity at all, it's typically well under the i/o rate for a typical 7200rpm drive

the only time it's going to help is on bootup (which takes <1 minute on even the slowest hard drives) and if you do FULL installs on games. And with the increased speed, you also lose capacity, so your ability to do FULL installs is going to be greatly diminished anyways.

It's up to you, but i'll take capacity and price over speed until 10,000 becomes the standard, and the capacity is on par with the 7200 drives.
 
The 10k drives are only worth it if you are willing to spend a large portion of money for a nominal increase in performance. As far as gaming you will see no difference. The drive you mentioned in your original post will be quite speedy. 16MB cache and 3.0 GB/s transfer rate is plenty for everyday use and gaming.
 
I have a 7200RPM WD SE16 250Gb and my P4HT OC'ed to 3.6Ghz can't keep up with it, why get a 10,000RPM drive when it bottlenecks down to SATA 1 1.5Gb/s.
 
'firsttimebuilder' is right. more hdd for raid the better.

I donno about the states but in NZ I can get 3x 250gig's Sata 7,200rpm 3.0 gigs/s harddrives for the price of 1x 150gig 10,000 rpm hdd. If you use raid that is proven to be faster than your 1x 150gig 10,000 rpm hdd from www.tomshardware.com . so if you really want performance then get 4 10,000 rmp hdd and use raid.

+ you'll get 750gigs of space to work with rather than 150gigs

yikes, people will kill you if they hear you say raids are faster than a raptor

raids only increase the performance of read, they do nothing to decrease the seek time of the drive, and therefore may actually DECREASE the speed of reading many small files.

Their only real benefit is in reading a single large file, uninterrupted.

Fragmentation, and multiple processes quickly degrade RAID performance, and bring it back down to average performance.

RAID's best implementation is in a secondary storage drive, for storing large files.

It's usually beneficial to have another, non-raid drive for small files, and your o/s.
