That's BS. They both produce great cards. However, when it comes to the budget lineup, Nvidia so far has the upperhand with the 7600 series. Currently, nvidia is dominating the DX10 market with the 8800's, but ATI is coming back with the x2900's soon. So i don't know where you heard that rumor, but it's not true.
 
Nvidia is DOMINATING every part of the market now. ATI's only hope is their new line of DX10 cards and if they are like the high end of the X1k series then its going to fail dismally. Nvidia's budget to mid range lineup uses less power and performs better than their ATI counterpart. Take the 7600GT and X1650Xt for example. the 7600GT sports a puny heatsink and fan and doesn't require an external power supply, while the X1650XT is slower and dons a HUGE copper heatsink and requires external power. Just from the amount of heat generated, I would choose Nvidia over Ati.
