Hi everyone, my cousin tryed to turn his comp on liek 1 week ago and the computer turns on but no signal form monitor, so i took out the video card and it has 5 blown capacitors. there hasn't been any lightning or anything, but i did notice his heatsink were very clogged with dust, probably NO airflow at all. i know blown caps are very common on this cars cause teh caps are garbage.

My question is, if i put new caps in, will the video card work? Or am i wasting my time?

I just don't want to put all new ones in then have it not work. Would rather ask everyones opnion first!

Let me know guys!

your wasting your time. odds are that any one of the caps exploded and sent a voltage spike through the GPU. probably fried the core.

Also, if the caps exploded.... Anyone else think there might be somethin wrong with the power supply? Usually when the caps blow on a card its with a cheaper power supply.. or just bad luck possibly...or just the card being really old.

Possible.......on the otherhand with a bad powersupply that may have effected other components on the rest of the computer. Might be and could be though. Even if ya check it, it has to be checked under load.

thanks guys, he said he'll spend $75-$100 on a new card, he has the PCI-E slot. Whats the best card he can get in that price range?

suggestions??

If he does just buy a new card don't just junk the old one. Caps can be found for what, $0.50 a piece. I'd take $2.50 to grab some caps and resolder some on, if it were me that is. It's not all that difficult of a process if you've got the tools.

Interesting hour or so at the very least. But to each their own.
