775 or 478?

socket 775 is newer. Also the 945X and the 955 chipsets are socket 775. If you're getting a desktop, definitely the lga775.

I back what XHotxEx791 said, because, not only are 775 chips faster, 478 has been discontinued (that's why 775 are faster ;) ), so if you're going to want to upgrade in the future, 775's the way to go.

the range of chip availble for the 775 is higer because it is the currently used chipset. Socket 478 is being phased out.

And the lastest chipsets for dual core 945G 945P, 955X are all for the skt775 dual core chips

on the same note, i have a p4 478 that i need a mobo for. id like to get an intel board, but where can i? or should i just go to frys or something

the 775 have alot more motherboard that support SLI, the 478 only have a few (i've only seen 1 before). The LGA775 cpu's cost a little more then the 478. And the 478's have more celeron chips than the 775. They are pretty much the same for gaming.

It wont really be a "intel" board since they dont make motherboards, it'll be some other brand with that socket, and Frys will have it, good place to do to, they still carry many of those very cheap too.

SKT 478 is being phased out very very quickly, to future proof then i suggest 100% that you go with LGA775. Between the two i wouldnt have thought 478 would even have popped into your mind, 775 is so much more advanced.

I still like the 478 even though its being phased out. Lots of good prices and good overclockers can be found. All depends on what your willing to spend.

If you get one of the best 478's by the time you need to upgrade again the 775's will prabally be cheap enough and there might even be a new socket.

you could pick up a p4 at 3.4ghz, that would easily see you through until M2 socket is rolled out. How much future proof do you think buying a 775 will give you - a few months maybe?

Hmmm. OK i suppose its not as large a difference as i thought. ah well. But i did kinda mean things like fans and heatsinks and water coolers. They arent being manufactured for SKT478 anymore (or not as much as they used to be at least).

i doubt you'll have trouble getting a waterblock, or any fan for skt 478. Most good third party fans are 478 and 775 compatible, same goes for most good water coolers. Id say 90% of all fans and blocks will cater for both sockets

Damn, im really not going to win this conversation, i give in, but to sound good when you tell ur mates i would go for 775, its newer and sounds better

ive heard that my processor (in my sig, northwood core) can overclock up to 4ghz, and around 3.4-3.6 without a problem... not too shabby for an old and tired socket design.
i guess ill try frys for an intel mobo, thats where i got mine about 3 years ago..
unfortunately, no pci-e boards for my processor, only prescott core socket 478's :(
