7800 gt or gtx?

Yeah plus if you overclock a GT you will be equal or better then a 7800GTX.
Good luck OCig it that much :)

Plus, your still missing those 4 pipes.
yes but we can effectively consider stock 68GS and 68GT to be spitting-distance on-par -- and the 68GS is missing a quad :)

I thought I heard somewhere that you could unlock the pipes
Dont think you can for G70s

you can not unlock the disabled quad. period.
Actually you can. You cant however unlock a laser-cut quad. (EDIT: just realized you were referring specicially to the G70s rather than a generalized statement)

wow i dunno wtf you guys are talkin about... i can play aoe3 maxed at 1280x1024 ???
Play is one thing (and really should be what matters but apprently not), but people seem to think you need 30fps+ to play an RTS....

when the difference really IS minimal...
yep, i can attest to that (although it really only applies to the majority of the computing population rather than the very high performance boxes which would be unbalanced with a 78GT)

i think 30 fps would be minimal for me to play a game comfortably... depending. like halo for instance is much slower playing than unreal tournament 2004, just because the guy moves slower.

i bet they'll figure out a way to unlock pixel pipelines in g70 chips, i could be way off though. i think its like saying there wont be a way to burn blu-ray discs, of course that for a different section in the forum to debate.

they are physically disabled... if you cut off an arm, it will not grow back. i dunno how else to explain it

While I cannot attest to the difference between the 7800gt and the gtx, I can attest to the performance of the 7800gtx alone. Before I had the gtx, I had the 6800Ultra AGP (and a crappier box) Ive noticed a huge difference in games. I can run virtually any game at 1280x1024 with settings maxed. Of course, there are exceptions where I cannot max out everything, namely, doom3. The whole point of what i'm saying is its all about your personal preference and how important it is to you for your box to a)run as smooth as possible with no slowdowns in the most greuling situation and b)be future proof to keep with the demands of games for the next couple years. I used to just upgrade bits and pieces as time demanded and found that this was just keeping me afloat. I always had to worry whether or not my box was gonna have an issue. Finally, I just threw out the money and built a box that is gonna last for awhile. Like i said, its all a personal preference. Is there much of a difference now between the gt and gtx? probably not worth $150 difference. Will there be much of a difference in a year or so when you do not have that extra quad of pipelines? Probably a little bit more yes.

i bet you could max everything in doom 3 except for AA and AF and fps would be just fine! i wouldnt know for sure though, my monitor sucks and only supports 1280x1024 (even as a 17" CRT).
