7800 gtx 512 mb or 256 mb

the gtx 512 is good for playing quake 4 ultra settings. as the ultra settings can only be played on a system with lots of ram or 512mb of vram, thanks to the compressed textures. other than that, the 512 is overkill.

Hey dude i used to wonder the same thing about the video card and i just spent the few extra bucks i looked at it this way why upgrade your gpu and get the average card when in a few months it will be a "meh" card so if u get the sweet card now in a few months/year it will still be one of the best and it will take a while for that card to drop in price and ati is pretty much never gonna come out with crossfire at the rate they are going so i would say from experience get the 512 and enjoy it i just started playin battlefield 2 and everything is maxed and no lag and its sweet
where did you buy one?!?!?! $200-$300 more is not a few extra bucks.....and the way technology is progressing the 512mb will be a "meh" card too in a few months to a year. There is already talk of a new ATI card coming early 06....and it may be even better than the 7800gtx 512mb.

well... you can play BF2 maxed out with a 7800GTX too.. since i can play it with my 6800GT maxed out, without any lag.

And thats what they said about the X1800XT ;) . Its a vicious cycle :P. I would just get the 256 version instead of waiting for the 512 and paying $750. If your really want a 512 Mb card just get the X1800XT since its finally available because of the 7800GTX 512 craze.

atm i dont think there is any game that will put the extra 256mb to use, but if u plan on owning system for while and not upgrade u might wanna get the 512

Hey

I bought my 512 card at a place called Memory Express ordered it in, since i am canadian and newegg doesn't ship to canada YET... 2006...and i seen it on ebay for around 1300 canadain which is about 20 bucks american..haha its actually around 1000 but with shipping, insurance, and that damn border it would be around 1250ish.... and got it from the comp store for 929.99 plus tax so it would be around 800 american for it and the 256 version is around 750 canadian so 630 american but since i paid for the card ahead of time and he "promised" it to me at an earlier date he dropped off 75 bucks brought it down to 915 after tax so a few hundred bucks so u know figured x-mas came earlier. but i hear its pretty hard to get the cards now from readin posts and what not but i guess its just about preference..

Theres already talk about nVidia's new card that has ~30 piplines.

I'd go with the X1800XT 512MB.

i looked at that card but it only had 16 pipelines.
True, but its a great deal compared to the 7800GTX which is $750. the 7800GTX 256MB would be a great choice if you dont want to go the ATI route.

quake 4 ultra settings requires 512mb video memory. or LOTS of free ram.

ultra settings requires 512mb video but u can run it on run 256MB or 128MB, i have tryed to run it on ultra setting on my system and it was playable but the game loading time was too slow, so i switched back to high setting. anyway there is no big difference between ultra or high setting, the game looks great on high setting.

^um it will "play" on ultra, but it will be skippy as it loads the textures from the hard drive. you can "run" it, but it is hardly considered playable... unless your machine is a freak
