7800gt questions

hello! first and foremost, i am a complete n00b at computers. with that out of the way...

i am going to get a 7800gt for my computer, just around 300 dollars on newegg...i have noticed that there are many different companies that have their name in front of the 7800 gt part. is that because it is their own variation of the 7800gt, or just because they have their logo on it? are they all the same? if not, in your opinion, which one is the best?

ok, next, is the 7800gt all that great? am i going to like it (i game a lot)? is there anything about the 7800gt i should know about?

7800gt is better than anything except the gtx and the x1800xt... if you dont like it, you dont have but a couple choices to upgrade to, and they wont be THAT much faster. you cant unlock the extra pipelines, btw.
 
well it really doesnt matter what comapny you get. they are all the same video card except one company might have better fan or what not. another difference is the customer service you get. each company is different but i hear EVGA is the best.

The 7800GT is a gr8 card for gaming, My mate has a Leadtek 7800GT and he can run BF2 on high settings.

Its PCI-X so make sure your mobo supports that. I think the mergority/if not all the 7800GT`s are compatible with SLi. So you can use more than 1 card if you have a compatible mobo.
 
And some (like BFG) come factory overclocked only by 25 mhz on the core and 50 mhz on the memory which doesn't sound like a big deal but that means they usually come with a better heat sink which means you can overclock higher. I have a BFG and i got mine to 515/1.33 bench stable.
 
evga offers one of the best warranties. if you overclock the card, it will not void the warranty (in most cases). they also offer copper heatsinks on most of their 7800's... and come factory overclocked as well (nothing special, many companies offer factory o/c, not just bfg LOL) i would recommend reading the reviews on newegg... bfg's don't o/c well from my experience
 
I know BFG isn't the only one thats why i put "(like BFG)" not just "(BFG)", and all of my best overclocking cards were BFG i owned a MSI and it did well too, but for some reason when i put that one in it lost quality. I don't know what that was about.
 
Some of the things that can be different are:

  • Warranty
  • Clock Speed (some are OC'd by default)
  • Extras (games, cables, software, adaptors, etc...)
  • Heatsink (Some companies use a better quality heatsink)

Personally, my first look is always at the cheapest card. It usually takes something very special to convince me to pay a premium for what is, essentailly, the same card.
