780i Issue

Maybe someone can help me,
I have a 780i motherboard with 4gb ram and an Intel 3.0 dual core cpu. For the last year I have been running with the default cpu fan that came in box. But when I pulled the fan off and installed the heat sink for my new liquid cooling I thought I heard a little "click". After an install of Ubuntu 9.04 I thought I was all set but now when I touch the box the system reboots. I found that if I pressed on the top of the mother board where what I assume are inductors the board reboots if an OS is loaded and freezes if in BIOS. I have bench tested with nothing but the board, psu, 1gb ram stick, and a 256mb pci card and was able to replicate the issue over and over. I want to know if this might be a cpu problem or a board problem before I buy a new 780i. Any ideas?

Hey. I have the same board in my second system right now and I actually ran into the same problem when I bought my heatsink. When I pressed down on the heatsink, my comp would also restart. The solution to my problem was that there was an insulating sticker that goes on the back of my mounting plate and I some how managed to take it off and this caused my motherboard to short out.

As you can see in the picture, there is a white sticker on the mounting plate. If you cpu cooler came with one of these, make sure that it is on there.

Thermaltake

I have a big water series system and was given a foamy board, a piece of mylar and a metal plate. From the bottom of the board it goes foamy board - mylar - metal plate - mounting screw head. According to the instructions I must mount my board with the foam peice and the mylar. But you bring up a very good point I will do bench testing when i get back from school and will post the results with the original default heat sink. But if this does fix the issue I will then have to figure out why, I don't think foam is conductive enough to cause an issue?
Thank you very much.

This is the system.

When it rains it POURS!

Okay, I have set the board up with nothing but the bare essentials and the default cpu fan that was on their before. Now all i get is "- -" on the little 8 segment led displays and after roughly 10 seconds the system shuts down. No video out or BIOS. I dont even get the BIOS start up numbers. So im back to the original question if its the board or the cpu, im really leaning towards the board now.

when boards short out they tend not to work afterwards, but unfortunately there is no way to tell without another computer if your CPU was affected too. i would contact evga and get the motherboard replaced.

Sadly, I bought this board 3-4 years ago when I was collecting parts for the build. So i have no idea if they'll help me but i will call. I also just looked in my mothers pc and she has a LGA775 as well. So im going to pull my processor and test it in hers. But before that, does anyone think that their is any chance of this damaging her system at all if the processor is fried?
