7900GT vs x1800Xt(512 memory)

Nutcase said:
Indeed! There is no boundary for 7900GT's memory? It can be 512 as well as 256...
Yeah but there isnt a 512 mb version of the 7900GT out, so its the fairest comparison. Geoff, where are those benchmarks from, just wondering.

the reason so many people say
7900GT over x1800xt
7600gt over x850xt

is cus people like nvidia more than ATI... it is fanboyism... they are both good companies but lets compare the 2 sets of cards...(bold signifies where the card is better then the other card)

Geforce 7900GT:
Core Clock: 550MHz
Memory Clock:1580MHz
Pixel Pipelines:24
Memory Size:256MB
Memory Interface:256-bit

Radeon X1800XT:
Core Clock:625MHz
Memory Clock:1500MHz
Pixel Pipelines:16
Memory Size:512MB
Memory Interface:256-bit
that specs are so close except that 512MB kills every advantage the 7900GT has over the x1800xt...

and just to compare these cards... (to get it out of the way in future threads)
HIS Hightech Radeon X850XT IceQ II (it has a different fan/heatsink design as the other x50xt cards because they are so loud... so this is very quite and very cool...)

Core Clock:520MHz
Memory Clock:1080MHz
Pixel Pipelines:16
Memory Size:256MB
Memory Interface:256-bit

Geforce 7900GT:
Core Clock:580MHz
Memory Clock:1500MHz
Pixel Pipelines:12
Memory Size:256MB
Memory Interface:128-bit

here imo, 16 pixel pipelines wins out... and the core clock of the 7900GT isn't much better than that of the X850XT...

so... the 420MHz faster memory clock speed of the 7900GT is justified by the 16 Pixel Pipelines of the x850xt...
the 30MHz faster clock speed isn't as big as a difference as the 256bit memory interface...

i know we aren't discussing that card, but i needed to get that out as an example of what is wrong with some of the nvidia fanboyism...

examine the cards' real world performance, too:

Yep and so there are ATI fanboys who are always accusing nVidia fans of being fanatic towards nVidia while they are fanatic towards ATI =)

But both cards are good.. It´s just like buying Logitech G5 and Razer Copperhead both are close when looking at performance... I bought G5 cause It feels better in MY hand.. :)

And for Encore4More: The 7600GT has PS 3.0 support while X850 series don´t have it...

im not a ATI fanboy... i just find the x850xt better then the 7600GT and the x1800xt being better then the 7900GT...

but i find the 7900GTX being better then the x1900xtx... and i find the x800gt as not as good as the 6600GT...

some very weird comments floating around in this thread...

3dmark scores dont matter for crap, I got 4200 with my 7800GT, does that mean mine is better than both? no. Also, somehow I get faster framerates on those games than the aformentioned cards. which seems odd.

Also, doesnt quake 4 have a fps limit of 63fps? For some reason I thought it did, as I always play at that and it never goes higher, no matter if I keep the settings at max or lower them as far as they go. that's without vsync on.

the x1800xt is slightly better i think. I'd probably still go 7900GT. the price for the 256mb's are incredibly low (hovering around $300 at some places).

Some companies modify there drivers so that there cards recieve higher scores in benchmarks, but doing so sometimes hinders real-world performance.

so what have we learned today? People with ATI cards choose the X1800XT, and the people with Nvidia cards choose the 7900GT. That being said, I have an ATI card so I choose the X1800XT:D.

Dont be ignorant. People are choosing the x1800XT because it outperforms the 7900GT in all 3DMark benchmarks, and is better in most games.

People just dont want to face the facts, that the 7900GT isnt all they thought it would be.

I have a nagging itch in the back of my mind saying "Get the 7900! Get the 7900!" just because it sounds newer and seems better. But I know what to really get.

Hey, I agreed with you. I read every post in the thread before posting that, and whole-heartedly agree that the X1800XT is better. I just noticed that mostly everyone with an Nvidia suggested the 7900GT, and the same for ATI and the X1800XT. I've been on both sides, and have been much happier with my ATI cards.

Yep it depends on what you personally like.. I kinda like both brands but I don´t personally like that ATIs catalyst driver hassle.. there´s just too much stuff init and I find it a bit more complicate than those Force Ware drivers of nVidia.. So I kinda prefer nVidia over ATI but ít isn´t impossible that I might buy X1900GT instead of 7900GT... It depends on which is cheaper..

But what if you OC both cards, X1800XT & 7900GT to their max? Which would go faster then?

Well i have an nVidia card, but i think the x1800XT is better :)
