7970 overheating

Hey all. I have a blower style 7970 and it goes all the way up to 97 degrees celcius. If I crank the fans to 100%, it even goes to 85 degrees. If I buy an aftermarket cooler, it's $80-90 which is almost the price of the gpu itself. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Have you dusted it out?

Do not run the card if you can't keep it under 80 degrees. My 7970 started giving me a ton of issues after I hit 95oC once.

You could try replacing the thermal paste on it. If it's a blower I'd guess it's one of the early 7970's and been in use a while. Thermal paste can lose efficacy over time.

How's your airflow in the case and what's your power supply?

Just thought I'd throw this in here, actually one little trick for cooling is... how cold is your room the computer is in? Cooling the air temp can greatly reduce the temp of your computer parts, although it sounds like there is an issue with the card's cooling.

Place an 120mm fan in front of the blower and connect it to the motherboard. Set that fan to fun at performance. It will definitely help. Also, as Darren said, replace the thermal paste.

Why do you go about responding to threads that are 3 weeks old and already answered with no response from OP? Seems a bit redundant.

Because forums are a record, that get searched for years to come and any information that can be added can help others. Its not an IM service.
