Here's a workaround for anyone happening to read this thread which I figured out subsequent to my initial posts. First, I happened to have a spare ATX power supply which no longer worked (it lost it's soft start capability, but seemed to work otherwise). It turns out the 4 pin connector will mate up with the 4 holes to the left of a 4 pin cpu connector. So it's a homemade 8 pin cpu connector. It helps to trim some of the plastic from the side adjacent to the exiting 4 pin connector. It turns out to be the side with "ears" on it. This just makes it fit without have to force it. I removed this from the old psu, leaving about 10" of wire. There are 4 wires(red, black, orange, and yellow)
Then, assuming you have an extra 4 pin molex connector hanging off the power supply you intend to use, cut that off making sure to leave enough wiire to be able to reach the 8 pin cpu connector on the mobo. You will only use 2 of the wires that went to the molex connector, a black ground wire and a yellow 12v wire. Connect the yellow wire that went to the molex to the red and black wires coming from the modified 4 pin connector. Connect the black molex wire to the orange and yellow wires. Before I hooked anything up I started the PSU unconnected to the mobo and checked to make sure that I had the correct voltages.
That's it. I plugged it in and it works.
