I have this mobo
MSI P6N SLI-FI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX

it has an 8 pin CPU connector, but do I really need that in my PSU? The power supply I wanted to get only have a 4 pin. Do I absolutely need the 8 pin connector, or can I just use a 4 pin?

i think you can use 4 pin on a 8 pin but im not sure because someone told me if you had 8 pins on your mobo the 4 pins are main power and the other 4 pins are back up power

I just didn't know if it was absolutely necessary. I actually just got a $3.50 adapter to convert a 4pin into an 8pin. It should work fine. Thanks for the help again.

The image there shows that a 4pin plug will go right on with half of the 8pin socket covered with the tab. When going from an TP II 480w supply to the TP II 550w model I ended up finding the 4pin and 8pin. That shows that some boards either need or offer extra power.

Usually if the board comes with a cap over 4 of the 8 pin CPU power inlet it means you dont have to use a 8 pin, same goes for the 20/4 pin power inlet, but its still better to use all the 8 or 24!
