Hey everyone,

So it's been 4 years since I built my last computer and am in the market for building a new one. I will use it for gaming also so that should be factored in. What is the best I could get for $850 right now?

I need everything except the monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse, and operating system (I have Vista 64 bit).

Thanks!

Intel

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P
OCZ 2 x 2GB DDR2 1066 OCZ2G10664GK

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB OEM
LITE-ON 22X DVD Burner Black SATA Model iHAS122-04 - OEM
OCZ Fatal1ty OCZ550FTY 550W
Antec Three Hundred

the downside of this intel list is LGA 775 will die soon. Or you could spend extra $150 to go for core i7 920 + X58 Mobo + 6GB DDR3 RAM + 750W PSU (if you want to run CF or SLi)

Or you could go for AMD option
Phenom II x 4 940 + GIGABYTE GA-MA770-UD3 + 4850 x2

Basically, youll get a Phenom II 940, 4GB RAM, 4870, 700W PSU, 22x DVD burner, 500GB HDD. Since you have an OS, take 100 bucks off, and get the motherboard for the lower budget( so you have intel mobo) and get the q9650. Total as it is in the guide is $862 shipped, after rebates. But since you arent getting the OS, but probably a diff proc, it'll be less :)

I'm a little surprised actually, I thought I could get partially better parts for this price. I need just one DVDRW drive and power supply and case too. I saw that one build was for Core 2 Duo and the other was for the AMD Phenom II 940. Would it not be optimal to go with an Intel Quad Core?

it would but since your on a budget, its best to put the money where its really going to make a difference, namely the video card.

+1 for intel build. id go gtx260 over 4870 too.

well the antec 900 is the most popular case here for a reason. it may cost $130 shipped, but its worth it. the problem with cheaper cases is you get cheaper parts, they are MUCH louder, and there might be cabling issues. with well known cases like the antec 900 and the antec 300, your assured quality parts and quiet operation.

They're good starting points.

Keep the basic hardware in mind, motherboard, cpu, power supply, and
you can add or change or delete other components to fit your budget.

It's not meant as a "buy this exact build". Just guidelines.

Tell me what you guys think of this build I came up with:

Total is: $753.92 and probably $35.00 shipping so $789.00 for everything.
Is this not a great build? Also, would any parts from those specifications "hold me down"?

Thanks everyone!

It's all very nice, but the RAM you've selected is a Triple Channel kit, and
that board only supports Dual Channel.

The board is 4×240pin DIMM slots, which is meant for two Dual Channel kits
of up to 8Gigs of RAM.

If you put 6Gigs in that board, which you certainly can, it will only run in
Single Channel mode, because one of the slots will be empty for that channel.

Like two of these:

Thanks for this; that helped! Would you recommend getting 8 gigs or sticking to 4 for now?

Also do you think that that 600W power supply will suffice?

That power supply is perfect. It has four 12+ rails rated at 18Amps each.

As for the RAM, get what you can afford. You can always add more later.

Btw, I have almost the same video card you picked, and you will LOVE IT. =D

Definitely man. Yeah that graphics card is going to be a beast of a card I can already tell... I can't wait. I think I'm going to wait until mid-May to purchase my computer though now that I think about it. I can wait another 2 months and I'm sure by then I could get the same thing for $100 dollars less. Any possibility I could get an I7 system within the $850 budget by then? (Oh, and is it truly worth it over the quad core?).
