8600 GT on 300w

There should be specs on the power supply. Check for a sticker to see what amps it has on the +12v rail. I'd say you'd want a minimum of 25amps.

Worst case, if it begins to act up, a replacement power supply shouldn't be a tremendous amount more...

For a 300w unit to have 25a on the +12v, it would need to have every ounce dedicated to that rail, not exactly possible. :P Besides, the 8600gt only has a max power draw of like 50w, or 4a on the +12v, so small I'd say his PSU can handle it without even knowing the specs.

If it's a real POS though, it might blow up for little more reason.

Haha #1 cause of system failure: PSU explosions

I would look at a new power supply even if it can run it. Chances are your PSU is not very efficient and it also has a bad fan. Adding an 8600GT is going to turn your computer into an oven. Find a good, cheap PSU that has a 120mm fan on it and is around 400W-450W. My box recommend minimum 400W sooo, take that for whatever it's worth.

lol i power 2 hard drives, a 8600gt, a dvd/cd drive and burner and a sempron 2.1ghz*lol like 45watt* with my emachines w3644. Im guessing its got the same power supply. I know its 300watt.
