8600GT and MOBO question

just make sure you have enough power. The 8600gt isnt that hungry though, compared to its bigger brothers.

Are you going to game at all? If not, I would just save a little and get a 8500GT/8400GS with dual outputs... either of those will max out any older games, so... 8600GT is a gaming card (none too good at that, but still), so unless you are going to do some fairly heavy gaming I wouldn't put my money in it.

I wont be playing heavy games. Probably FIFA and Red Alert 3.. thats about it , and I can see the 8500GT has 2 DVI ports so thats good.

I have a 300W HEC PSU.

1. Would that be enough for the 8500GT? Im also concered about the card size. My current card is 6600GT. Do you think im gonna have any problems with the size of the card and my MOBO?

2. What about heating? does this card doing problems with heating?

thanks again for your help

red alert 3 is a pretty heavy game

Cnc3 runs on a 8600, on like medium/high, so RA3 should run.

and the 8600 is a pretty small card, you shouldnt have a problem. Even fits in my dell.

maybe just.

depends if your PSU is any good or not. Whats the current on each of the 12v rails?

and yet again, that seems to have a huge fan

on the sticker on the side of the PSU it will have some specs like

+12v 1 18A
+12v 2 22A

etc...

post them here

+3.3v 28A

+5v 30A

+12v 15A

-5v 0.5A

-12v 0.8A

+5Vsb 2A

Total output = 300W

hope that helps

woah 15a is nothing. You will need a new PSU with an absolute minimum of 18a on the second 12v rail, for your machine to even boot with an 8600 installed.

Its even going to be pusing it with the 8400, that requires 15a itself,

You only have one +12v rail so you basically need double that requirement, as the CPU will use some (usually in the case of dual rail psus it has the first one to itself)

I understand.. Buying a PSU along with a card will just make it more expensive and that wasnt my intension. Im gonna stay with my 6600GT for now, that is until im gonna buy a new computer, and until thats gonna happen i will have no choice but to connect my PC to my LCD monitor with a VGA cable and leave the DVI output for the LCD TV.

From what i heard, the VGA or DVI wont make such of a difference so i hope thats true.

Thank you very much for the kind help

DVI is a lot better. Even if the quality doesn't improce noticeably, you have to keep pressing this "auto" button pretty much very time the resolution changes, and sometimes it's just annoying because some monitors never aling the picture right. I remember one time when I was playing a game, the picture had a 1-inch black bar on the side and chopped off another inch ffrom the other side. They need to do some weird type of adjusting to get the picture at the right position... never had to do that when I got a card with DVI output. DVI FTW!!!!!
