8600gt

What are people's thoughts on the 8600GT?

I've read some good reviews but then the guys on overclockers say to avoid it.

I'm looking at a system upgrade (AMD 64 X2 5600+, 2Gig GEIL) and want a new gfx card, something that will play the new UT3 comfortably when it's released (under Linux)

The 8600GT is a good price for me, I'm not sure I need an 8800 and the rest of my system would have to be compromised to afford one right now.

This is my opinion, but I would say that buying an 8600GT would not be a good choice for a few reasons.

1.) You can buy better performing DX9 cards for a lower price then the 8600GT.
2.) You may want it so you can play DX10 games, but the fact is, when DX10 games are out and about, the 8600GT wont be able to handle them well.

Using Linux, I won't be able to take advantage of DX10 anyway, so I don't care whether it's any good at that side of things.

What matters to me is OpenGL performance.

I can't find any OpenGL comparisons between the cards though.

I'm after a PCI-E card, that's Nvidia based and a lot quicker than my current 6800 128MB.

If you dont care about DX10 anyways, then I would look at the 7900 series cards, or the 7950GT.

I don't know how more current cards do with OpenGL. I do think many support a newer version than say my current 7600... But here's the strange thing; my previous 6200TC did much better in OpenGL than my current 7600GT. Games like Plasma Pong and Second Life run pretty jerky on my current machine, but ran almost perfect using the 6200...
