8800 Series or 4800 Series? That is the question...

Hey guys,

I'm currently considering upgrading my X1800XT for the best card I can get for around £130 - £150. I just got Far Cry 2, but don't want to play it until I get a better card so I can play it at full res (1920x1200) with no problems!
I was looking at maybe getting a 4850, but I'm not really 'on the scene' anymore, so I'm not 100% sure this is the best thing for me.

Anyway, a little insight and help would be much appreciated here. :)

4800 series will definitly be able to run Far Cry 2 fully maxed without a problem. Not too sure if the 8800 series would perform the same as I dont have one of them.
 
my 8800gt runs on very high and gets smooth FPS, with no AA. the 4800 series would be able to max it out, definitely.

Well Tim I'd stick with ATi and the 4850, Nvidia seem to be falling behind as of late to be honest and in any case ATi seem to produce better drivers.
 
Go with the 4850. For the price, it can't be beat.

The 8800GT is still a good card, but for just a little more money, you can get one that is noticeably better (for most games).
 
Here's a comparison between the 8800GT and the HD4850.

They're both pretty close, but I'd say that the 4850 has a little lead over the 8800. However, nVidia have been throwing out drivers lately which have all been seeing a pretty big increase in performance. Far Cry 2 specifically, nVidia wipes the floor with ATI in that game, also some other games, mainly the ones, "The way it's meant to be played" you know...

I'd actually say it was down to personal choice, which brand do you prefer? I guess if I was to buy a new card today and I HAD to pick one, not taking into fact the brands, I'd pick the 4850.

and here is a comparison of the 8800GT and a GTX260. similar specs in some areas, the 8800GT even beats the 260 in one. but the GTX260 is leaps and bounds better than the 8800GT in reality. you can't compare specs on GPUs and hope to get an accurate portrayal of how the card performs. it just doesn't work like that anymore. the only reliable way of knowing is to read benchmarks.

You mean like when I mentioned nVidia cards being better than ATI cards in certain games...

You said that we need to look at Benchmarks to see accurate results, because you don't rely on specs. In my first post, I had said that nVidia cards perform better in certain games, how would I know this... Benchmarks.

In that price range, either the 9800GTX+ or the 4850. I would get the 9800GTX+ myself.

Whos comparing the 8800GT with the 260 or why would they. And do you really think you need to explain the differences in clock speed of different cores to Korn.

Between those the 4850 is the faster card. To equal or better a 4850 you would have to go with a 9800GTX or +. ATI released the 4830 to compete with the 8800/9800GT

i was simply proving a point. GPU specs are misleading, it is a fact. had i pointed that out to anyone else, it would not have gotten a second notice. but god forbid i point anything out to CFs golden boy.

I dont know about golden boy or do I care, there is nobody on this fourm that knows jack but me:D. Am I conceated or not?;) Or just damn good!
 
1GB is a bit of a waste TBH, get a 512MB variant and save a few quid. The 9800GTX is good though. What PSU are you running?
